DES MOINES, Iowa – Keyan Hernandez of the Team Champs WC of Montana was named Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 106-pound weight class in the High School Grade 9-10 division at the USA Wrestling Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals on Saturday.
Hernandez was impressive in his 8-0 major decision shutout of Zane Donley of Threestyle Wrestling of Oklahoma in the finals. Donley, who was honorable mention in the recent FloWrestling national rankings, was among the many tough opponents in this loaded weight class.
The tournament was packed with talent from across the nation, with many of the most respected wrestling clubs entered. Two of these clubs, the Sebolt Wrestling Academy of Iowa and Izzy Style Wrestling of Illinois, had a pair of champions in the High School Grade 9-10 division.
The champions from the Sebolt Wrestling Academy were Carter Pearson (100) and Reid Spurley (113).
Person powered to a 10-4 decision over Lawson Eller of the Pinnacle WC of Minnesota for the title. Spurley, who is currently in the FloWrestling national rankings as honorable mention, defeated Caio Aron of the Boneyard Wrestling Academy of Texas, 6-2 in the finals.
The champions from Izzy Style Wrestling were Collin Carrigan (152) and Noah Wenzel (195).
Carrigan secured a 10-2 major decision over Anthony Rinehart of the Contenders Wrestling Academy of Indiana in the finals. Wenzel emerged with a 3-1 decision in the finals over Connor Bercume of Michigan. Wenzel was a 2021 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals champion in the 16U division.
The champion at 170 pounds, Aeoden Sinclair, Askren Wrestling Academy Lake Country of Wisconsin, added a Preseason Nationals title in folkstyle to his U15 National titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman from earlier this year. Sinclair scored a 9-1 major decision over Noah Torgerson of the Pinnacle WC of Minnesota in the finals. Sinclair was second in the Grade 9-10 division at the 2020 Brian Keck Preseason Nationals.
Securing the 126-pound title was Alex Braun of the Minnesota Elite Wrestling Club. Braun, who is ranked nationally by FloWrestling as honorable mention. Braun beat Joseph Simon of BullTrained Wrestling of Missouri in the finals, 4-2.
Other individual champions were Jackson Young of New Jersey (120), Tyler Guerra of SPAR Wrestling Academy of Illinois (132), Smokey McClure of Ascend Wrestling Academy of Washington (138), Jayden Colon of Stampede WC of Illinois (145), Talon McCollum of Husky WC of Oklahoma (160) and Cole Han-Lindemyer of Pinnacle WC of Minnesota (182).
Two weight classes, which featured round robin competition, was completed in the Friday session, with Vanden Hoffman of the Wrestling Factory in Wisconsin (220) and Logan Buchanan of the Newton Wrestling Club in Kansas (285) getting the titles.
