Jimenez earns silver, Kelly scores bronze at U20 World Championships

SOFIA, Bulgaria – The U.S. women’s freestyle team collected a silver and bronze medal on Thursday night of the 2022 U20 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

U20 WORLDS SPECIAL SECTION

Wrestling in the 50 kg finals, Audrey Jimenez fell to 2017 U17 World champion Umi Ito of Japan, 10-0. The silver medal comes just weeks after she went 0-1 at the U17 World Championships in Rome. Just 16 years old, Jimenez impressed on her way to the finals with three dominant wins competing at a higher age group. She adds to her 2021 U17 World bronze medal.

U20 WORLDS INTERVIEWS

At 76 kg, Tristan Kelly bounced back from a semifinal heartbreaker against eventual World champ Ayano Moro of Japan to win bronze. Facing U21 World bronze medalist Daniela Tkachuk of Poland, Kelly used a second-period double-leg to put her opponent to her back for a pin to get on the podium.

Five Americans will begin competition in Greco-Roman on Thursday, including Jonathan Gurule (55 kg), Haiden Drury (63 kg), Payton Jacobson (77 kg), Kodiak Stephens (87 kg) and Aden Attao (130 kg).

The tournament continues Friday, starting at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET), with semifinals scheduled for 4:45 p.m. (9:45 a.m. ET) followed by medal matches at 6 p.m. (11 a.m. ET). Fans can watch all the action live on FloWrestling and get live updates on Twitter @USAWrestling.
