Winchester, Molinari, Grote to battle for Pan American Championships women’s gold, Perkins and Cunningham will go for Greco-Roman bronze

ACAPULCO, Mexico — Three U.S. women freestyle wrestlers will compete for a gold medal at the Pan American Championships Friday night.
At 55 kg, 2019 World champion and 2020 Olympian Jacarra Winchester collected a fall over Peru’s Nadia Trujilano La Rosa in her first match. Winchester advanced to the semifinals after Lisily Lima Da Silva of Brazil forfeited. Winchester beat Lucia Yepez Guzman of Ecuador 11-0 to advance to the gold medal bout.
Winchester has drawn Canada’s Karla Godinez Gonzalez in the finals.
2021 World bronze medalist Forrest Molinari and Skylar Grote collected two wins in the round robin and are one win away from a gold medal.
At 65 kg, Molinari opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Saidy Chavez Figueroa of Honduras. In her second bout, Molinari defeated Mexico’s Atzimba Landaverde Moreno by an identical score. Molinari will scrap with Landaverde Moreno of Mexico in the gold-medal bout.
At 72 kg, Grote attacked from the whistle to record a technical fall in 41 seconds against Brenda Aguiar Dos Santos of Brazil. Grote advanced to the gold medal bout after Canada’s Taylor Follensbee forfeited her second match. Grote will wrestle Mexico’s Maria Garcia Bautista Friday night.
On the men’s side, RaVaughn Perkins and Tyler Cunningham will compete for Greco-Roman bronze medals Friday night.
At 77 kg, Perkins will battle Mexico’s Emmanuel Benitez Castro for a bronze medal. Perkins flattened Jerome Hoyte of Barbados just 1:02 in a qualifying round bout. At 82 kg, Cunningham pinned Brayden Ambo of Canada in the first period of his first match. A few bouts later, Cunningham advanced to the semifinals after officials disqualified Nestor Tafur Barrios of Colombia for accumulating three cautions. Tafur, who usually competes in freestyle, was an EIWA champion at Boston University. Cunningham lost his cross-bracketed semifinals match to Daniel Vicente Gomez of Mexico, 7-6. He will have a rematch with Tafur for the bronze medal.
In women’s freestyle 59 kg, Xochitl Mota-Pettis sustained an apparent left knee inury after being taken down in her first match. She wrestled through the injury and lost 19-8 against Mexico’s Ameyali Jessel Rojas. Canada’s Laurence Beauregard sent Mota-Pettis to her back and secured an early fall. There is one more match in the three-athlete round-robin, and Mota-Pettis will receive a bronze medal.
In Greco-Roman at 87 kg, Richard Carlson couldn’t overcome a 3-1 deficit against Carlos Munoz Jaramillo of Colombia. Jaramillo lost in the semifinals, eliminating Carlson from medal contention.
The medal matches for the day two weight classes will begin at 3 p.m. local time, which is identical to the U.S. Central Time Zone. All action is live on FloWrestling.
