There has been a schedule change for the 2022 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, set for Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. May 21-22.
The World Team Trials Challenge Tournament features top Olympic hopefuls in the three Olympic disciplines: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.
Winners and some of the runners-up will advance to Final X Stillwater on June 3 or Final X New York on June 8. Final X is the last step in the Senior World Team Trials process. which will determine the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Belgrade, Serbia, Sept. 12-18.
The session times for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament remain the same, but some of the semifinals matches have been moved from Saturday night to Sunday morning on the schedule.
There are 14 weight classes in which a 2021 World medalist has advanced directly to Final X. In those weight classes, only one athlete will advance to Final X, to challenge the 2021 World medalist for the berth on the World Team.
There are 16 other weight classes in which there is no World medalist, or a World medalist has declined to participate in Final X. In this case, the wrestlers who reach the Challenge Tournament finals in Coralville will both advance to Final X.
Previously, semifinals for all 30 weight classes were scheduled for Saturday evening. That has been changed.
In the new schedule, the semifinals for the weights with a Final X athlete already determined will still be held during the Saturday night session which begins at 4:30 p.m.
However, in the weight classes with no Final X athlete is already determined, the semifnals will be moved to the Sunday morning session which begins at 10:00 a.m.
What this means is that all of the athletes who will advance to Final X will have to weigh in twice.
In addition, all of the berths for Final X will be determined on Sunday, May 22.
Two Final X participants will be determined in the semifinals on Sunday morning at these weight classes:
Men’s Freestyle: 65 KG, 70 KG, and 125 KG
Women’s Freestyle: 53 KG, 59 KG, 72 KG, and 76 KG
