CONSTANTA, Romania – Isabeau Shalack of Oak Lawn, Ill. placed sixth in the Over 70 kg weight class in the women’s division, the highest place finisher for the United States at the Beach World Series Final on Mamaia Beach on Sunday.
The United States did not qualify any athlete for the championship bracket, ending their tournament with the completion of the Group competition.
Shalack placed second in Group B with a 2-1 record. She beat U.S. teammate Maren Anderson on Saturday, then split her two bouts on Sunday. Shalack scored an injury default win over Elena Margas of Romania, then fell to Aikaterni Pitsiava of Greece, 3-1.
Pitsiava won Group B and advanced to the semifinals, along with the winners of Group A and Group C. The final semifinal spot went Group C runner-up Stefania Zacheila of Greece, who scored five classification points, while Shalack had scored four classification points.
Four U.S. wrestlers placed third in their Group, but did not advance: Mia Macaluso of Otisville, N.Y. (Group A at 60 kg), Mitchell Cook of Orland Park, Ill. (Group B at 70 kg), Ty Loethen of Columbia, Mo. (Group A at 80 kg) and Jamal Morris of Miami, Fla. (Group D at 80 kg).
Their final placements were eighth place for Macaluso and Loethen, ninth place for Cook and 12th place for Morris.
Shalack and Loethen were the only U.S. entries to win two matches. Overall, eight of the 13 U.S. athletes won at least one match during the two-day event.
Other U.S. athletes in the top 10 were women wrestlers Maren Anderson (ninth at Over 70 kg) and Josephine Wearmouth of St. Charles, Iowa (ninth at 60 kg).
The United States placed eighth in the men’s team standings and ninth in the women’s team standings. Only one athlete earns points in each weight class for their country. Scoring points for Team USA men were Cook and Loethen, while scoring points for the U.S. women were Shalack and Macaluso.
When United World Wrestling announces the final standings from the five 2022 Beach World Series events, a report on where the U.S. athletes finished will be posted a different story.
This was the third of five Beach World Series events which will set the field for the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia, next August 5-12. The first two Beach World Series events of 2023 will complete the qualifying process. The top eight athletes per weight category and gender from these five events will earn a quota place for their National Olympic Committee at the World Beach Games. Current rankings for the World Beach Games quota positions will also be reported when available from United World Wrestling.
