Day one of U15 Pan American Team Trials concludes with five girl’s freestyle champions and ten Greco-Roman champions

The first day of the U15 Pan American Team Trials wrapped with five girl’s weights and Greco-Roman contested during the first two sessions. The girl’s champions earned spots on the U15 Pan American Team. The Greco-Roman athletes earned points toward their totals, which will be combined with the points following freestyle action on Sunday to decide the U15 Pan American Team.

Five girls earned spots on the 2023 U15 Pan American Team on Saturday, as the first five girl’s weights were contested during sessions one and two. At 33 kg, Maisie Elliott was the only athlete to register, so she was the first to earn a spot on the team. Elliott competed at 36 kg at the event, placing first. Timmery Condit, who placed second at 36 kg, earned the team spot.

The 39 kg bracket consisted of a round robin style tournament as there were three athletes registered. Gail Sullivan won both of her bouts at 39 kg to enter the best-of-three finals series. She brought down Libertie Nigh of Ohio to claim the Pan American team spot.

At 42 kg, Hailey Delgado captured the U15 Pan American Team spot, going 2-1 in the round robin bracket to reach the final series. Delgado swept Paris Soria in two close decision matches to earn the victory.

The final girl’s freestyle weight that was contested on day one was 46 kg, where Epenesa Elison came out on top. Elison used a pair of 10-0 technical falls to reach the final series, where she met Madison Nieuwenhuis of Michigan. The series went to Elison, two matches to none as she picked up two more 10-0 technical fall wins. Elison did not allow a single point in the tournament.

The boy’s U15 Pan American Team will be determined by a point system, so the Pan American Team spots will be finalized on Sunday following the conclusion of boy’s freestyle. More information about the U15 Pan American Team selection process can be found here.

The 10 Greco-Roman Champions that lead the point-based system following the first of the two styles of the U15 Pan American Team Trials were Hudson Chittum (38 kg), Keegan Bassett (41 kg), Reese Movahed (44 kg), Rocco Cassioppi (48 kg), Christopher Grossman (52 kg), Josiah Boyden (57 kg), Travis Cardenas (62 kg), Cooper Rowe (68 kg), Isai Fernandez (75 kg) and Evan Perez (85 kg).
