Six double champions, five girl’s freestyle champions highlight conclusion of U15 Pan American Team Trials

The final session of the U15 Pan American Team Trials concluded on Sunday at the Air Force Academy north of Colorado Springs, Colorado. All ten spots were decided for the girl’s freestyle team. The boy’s freestyle and Greco-Roman team will be announced Monday.

The teams will compete at the 2023 U15 Pan American Championships in Panama City, Panama, November 23-26.

There were five girl’s freestyle weights contested during the second day of the U15 Pan American Team Trials. At 50 kg, the team spot was claimed by Kayla Batres of South Side Wrestling Club. She navigated the round robin bracket of five athletes with four victories, sweeping her opponent in the finals by two technical falls.

The U15 Pan American Team spot at 54 kg was earned by Kaylyn Harrill of The Best Wrestler. In the finals, she faced Alexis Lazar of Michigan Revolution Wrestling Club in a rematch of the 2023 USMC Women’s National Championship where Lazar edged Harrill in a close 6-5 decision.

At 58 kg, it was Amaya Hinojosa of Goldman`s Wrestling Academy of the Rockies that claimed the team spot. Hinojosa used a pair of decisions in her 2-0 win in the best-of-three series against Riley Hanrahan of Team Nazar Training Center.

Taina Fernandez of Maryland was commanding in her best-of-three series at 62 kg, bringing Isabella Miller of Big Game Wrestling Club down by fall in 49 seconds in the first match. She earned the U15 Pan American Team spot by besting Miller by 11-0 technical fall in the second match of the series.

The final team spot was claimed by Violette Lasure of Misfits Girls Wrestling at 66 kg. Lasure fell short to Kaili Manuel of Michigan Revolution Wrestling Club in the first match of the series in a 7-4 decision. She fired back with fall at 3:51 to force a third match. Lasure earned the victory and the team spot by defeating Manuel in a 7-3 decision.

All ten of the U15 Pan American Team spots for Greco-Roman and freestyle will be announced on Monday following a verification process by USA Wrestling’s National Teams department. More information about the U15 Pan American Team selection process can be found here.

Double champions included Rocco Cassioppi (48 kg), Christopher Grossman (52 kg), Travis Cardenas (62 kg), Cooper Rowe (68 kg), Isai Fernandez (75 kg) and Evan Perez (85 kg).

Cassioppi, Grossman, Cardenas and Rowe earned All-American honors at the 2023 USMC 16U National Championships. Cardenas is a 2023 U.S. Open champion in freestyle, Fernandez placed first at the U.S. Open in Greco-Roman and second in freestyle, and Perez placed first at the 2023 Western Regional in both styles.
