BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The U.S. went 5-1 in the evening session on day three of the 2023 Pan-American Championships with four Americans claiming gold in emphatic fashion.
Olympic medalists Sarah Hildebrandt and Jordan Burroughs both fired off lighting quick 10-0 technical falls in their respective gold medal bouts.
In the 50 kg finals against Ecuador’s three-time Pan-American medalist Jacqueline Mollocana Eleno, Hildebrandt transitioned an early takedown into four leg laces to end the match in 48 seconds. It is Hildebrandt’s seventh gold medal performance at the Pan-American Championships. She also won a Pan-American Games title in 2019.
Burroughs uncorked his vintage double leg on three separate occasions, scoring exposures from two of them to end 2019 Pan-American bronze medalist Jasmit Phulka of Canada in 1:14. It is Burroughs sixth Pan-American Championships gold medal, and third at 79 kg. He also holds three Pan-American Games golds in his ever-expanding trophy case.
The other two U.S. champions were recent U.S. Open champions Forrest Molinari at 68 kg in women’s freestyle and Michael Macchiavello at 92 kg in men’s freestyle. Both posted first-period pins over past Pan-American medalists in their final match of the day to clinch gold.
Molinari, a 2021 World bronze medalist, qualified her weight class for the U.S. to compete at the 2023 Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile.
Kayla Miracle added a fifth Senior Pan-American Championships medal to her resume with a decisive 10-0 win over Chile’s Javiera Roco Pardo, who was the 2019 South American champion, in the 62 kg bronze medal bout.
It was a tough ending to the day for 2022 World champion Dominique Parrish. She wound up in fifth place at 53 kg after surrendering a walk-off four-pointer at the buzzer of her bronze medal match against Karla Acosta Martinez of Mexico. Acosta Martinez finished in ninth place at the 2022 World Championships in the bracket won by Parrish.
2016 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Helen Maroulis (57 kg) and 2022 U20 World bronze medalist Tristan Kelly (76 kg) both wound up in ninth place overall after being eliminated from medal contention earlier in the day.
The U.S. topped the women’s freestyle team rankings by earning seven medals, five of which were gold, and 178 team points. Canada came in second place with six medals and 135 team points. Rounding out the top three is Ecuador, who grabbed four medal and 93 team points.
The competition in Buenos Aires will continue at 9 a.m. (ET) tomorrow with the eight remaining men’s freestyle weight classes. The event is being broadcast live on FloWrestling.com.
