YAKUTSK, Russia - Gabriel Tagg (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/EAP) placed fifth at 61 kg/134 lbs. on the final day of the Roman Dmitriev Memorial International on Sunday.
This was a UWW Junior-level tournament with numerous competitors from Russia, as well as from many other top wrestling nations. A six-athlete U.S. team of Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) athletes were entered.
Tagg was defeated in a bronze-medal match by Erdenebat Tugsjargal of Mongolia, 14-10 on Sunday. Tugsjargal was eighth in the 2018 Asian Cadet Championships.
A North Carolina recruit, Tagg won his first three matches on Saturday, securing two pins against Russian opponents and also defeating EAP teammate Job Greenwood (Livermore, Colo./EAP), 7-5. He was beaten in the semifinals yesterday by Konstantin Kaprynov of Russia, 9-1.
