United World Wrestling, the international wrestling federation, recently updated its international event schedule for the 2021 year, providing dates and locations for many of the most important competitions in the sport.
The international wrestling schedule is very important as USA Wrestling, and all of the other national wrestling federations around the world complete their competition and training plans for the year.
The current UWW events schedule for 2021 includes 39 events in the Olympic wrestling styles, including a variety of age groups and a number of different levels of competition.
We have identified 13 events which, should they be held as scheduled, would likely feature athletes from the United States.
Of course, the biggest wrestling event of the year will be the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, August 1-7. The United States has qualified at 15 of the 18 weight classes for the Olympics, currently the most of any nation.
The USA will have one opportunity to qualify the three remaining weight classes for the Tokyo Olympics at the World Olympic Games Qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria, April 29-May 2. Those weight classes are 77 kg Greco-Roman, 130 kg Greco-Roman and 65 kg men’s freestyle.
Seeding at the Olympic Games and World Championships are determined through UWW Ranking Tournaments. There are two different Ranking events on the 2021 schedule, the Matteo Pellicone Ranking event in Rome, Italy, January 14-17 and the Ziolkowski/Pytlasinski/Poland Open Ranking event, Warsaw, Poland, June 8-13.
UWW ranking points are also available at the 2021 continental championships. The Pan American Senior Championships, where U.S. athletes participate, is set for May 27-30 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Less than two months after the Olympic Games, UWW will host a Senior World Championships in 2021 in Oslo, Norway, October 2-10.
UWW also has announced World Championship events at four other age levels for 2021. The Cadet World Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, July 19-25. The Junior World Championships are set for August 16-22 in Ufa, Russia. The U23 World Championships are set for November 1-7 in Belgrade, Serbia. The Veterans World Championships are set for October 19-24 in Loutraki, Greece.
The 2021 international schedule contains Pan American events at a number of age levels in addition to the Senior level.
For 2021, United World Wrestling has placed both the Pan American Junior Championships and the Pan American Cadet Championships at the same location, set for June 9-13 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Pan American Junior Championships is the qualifying event for a new competition, the Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.
In addition, the Pan American U15 Championships are scheduled for October 21-24 in Mexico City, Mexico. In one of the Associated Styles, the Pan American Beach Championships are also on the schedule Nov. 6-7 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
There are a number of other international competitions, hosted by a variety of different nations that are also available for U.S. athletes to compete in, should they choose to travel and enter.
Now that a significant portion of the UWW events schedule for 2021 has been published, USA Wrestling will be able to plan for possible international tours, as well as the appropriate domestic qualifying events.
