Our dear friend and teammate, Alan Vera, recently suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing soccer. He is currently hospitalized, fighting to regain his health. As a community, we encourage coming together to support Alan and his family.
Vera has been a cornerstone of USA Wrestling since 2015. His dedication and achievements in the sport are truly remarkable. Alan was the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up at 97 kg in Greco-Roman, the 2023 Senior Nationals champion, and the 2024 Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier finalist (which qualified the U.S. for the Olympic Games). He also earned a silver medal at the 2024 Pan American Championships and a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships. Additionally, Alan is a two-time Senior World Team member for the U.S.
Alan’s wife, Elena Pirozhkova, is a two-time Olympian, 2012 Senior World champion and seven-time Senior World Team member. The pair recently welcomed their first child, daughter Alina, just five weeks ago.
“Since 2015, Alan has been an integral part of our team, consistently supporting Team USA in any way he can. His selfless nature was evident when he recently volunteered at our Olympic camp to assist Joe Rau and the team,” said Herb House, the head coach of the USA Greco-Roman Wrestling team.
“Alan always prioritizes the needs of others before his own, and now it’s our turn to come together as a wrestling community to show him and his wife our unwavering support during this challenging time.”
There is an active fundraising campaign that has been launched to support baby Alina’s childcare needs during Alan’s recovery. The funds raised will be utilized to ensure that Alina receives the best possible care and attention. By providing them with the necessary financial support, we hope to ease their worries and allow them to focus on Alan’s recovery.
Alan’s soccer teammates, who witnessed his passion and dedication on and off the field, have joined hands to raise funds for this cause. We invite the wrestling community to be a part of the effort to provide comfort and stability Alan’s family during this time.
