Olympic Wrestling Live Blog: Sunday Session I: Final day! Blades for gold, Snyder for bronze

Team USA finished with seven medals in wrestling at Olympic Games Paris 2024, with four in women’s freestyle and three in men’s freestyle.
This included gold medals by Amit Elor at 68 kg and Sarah Hildebrandt at 53 kg in women’s freestyle. Silver medals went to Spencer Lee at 57 kg in men’s freestyle and Kennedy Blades at 76 kg in women’s wrestling. Bronze medals were earned by Kyle Dake at 74 kg and Aaron Brooks at 86 kg in men’s freestyle, plus Helen Maroulis at 57 kg in women’s freestyle.
For Maroulis, it was her third career Olympic medal, a gold in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and bronze medals in Tokyo in 2020 and Paris in 2024. She became the first U.S. woman to win three Olympic medals in wrestling.
Hildebrandt became a two-time Olympic medalist, with her gold in Paris to go with her bronze in Tokyo in 2020. Dake won his second Olympic bronze medal, to go with a bronze in 2020 in Tokyo.

Bronze –Milaimy Marin Potrille (Cuba) dec. Aiperi Medet Kyzy (Kyrgyzstan), 6-0

76 kg WFS gold medal –Yuka Kagami (Japan) dec. Kennedy Blades (USA), 3-1
Blades put on the shot clock and does not score, 1-0 for Kagami. Blades shoots a double to a step out, 1-1. It goes to break at 1-1, Blades criteria.
Kagami takes a shot on the edge, and gets a takedown, 3-1. No more scoring occurred. Kagami wins 3-1. Blades gets an Olympic silver medal.

Men’s Freestyle 97 kg
Gold - Akhmed Tazhudinov (Bahrain) pin Givi Matcharashvili (Georgia), 1:52
Bronze – Magomedkhan Magomedov (Azerbaijan) tech fall Murazi Mchedlidze (Ukraine), 10-0
Bronze –Amarali Azarpira (Iran) dec. Kyle Snyder (United States), 4-1#Paris2024
97 kg MFS bronze medal –Amarali Azarpira (Iran) dec. Kyle Snyder (USA), 4-1
Snyder shoots, re-shot takedown for Azarpira, 2-0. No other scoring, At the break, 2-0 Azarpira
Azarpira on the shot clock and does not score, one for Snyder, 2-1. Azarpira shot leads to a step out, 3-1. Snyder moves Azarpira around but steps out, 4-1 for Azarpira. Azarpira takes injury time with 31 seconds left. Time runs out, Azarpira wins 4-1. Snyder takes fifth at 97 kg.

Gold - Kotaro Kiyooka (Japan) dec. Rahman Amouzadkhalili (Iran), 10-3
Bronze – Sebastian Rivera (Puerto Rico) dec. Tulga Tumur-Ochir (Mongolia), 10-9
Bronze – Islam Dudaev (Albania) dec. Ismail Musukaev (Hungary), 13-12

Scoring a takedown at the last moment, Sebastian Rivera (Puerto Rico) beat Tulga Tumur-Ochir (Mongolia), 10-9 in the 65 kg bronze medal match. Rivera, from New Jersey, Northwestern and Rutgers, hit a big flip, and celebrated with corner coach Jeff Buxton. Bronze to Seabass!!!

Amarali Azarpira of Iran will be the opponent for Kyle Snyder in the 97 kg men’s freestyle bronze-medal match later today. He beat Alisher Yergali (Kazakhstan) in repechage, 6-1.

Sebastian Rivera of Puerto Rico, via New Jersey, Northwestern and Rutgers, has reached a bronze-medal match at 65 kg with a victory over Maxim Sacultan of Moldova, 15-4. He will face Tulga Tumur-Ochir (Mongolia) for the bronze
It is the final day of Olympic wrestling in Paris, and the USA has a shot at two more medals. Kennedy Blades goes for gold at 76 kg in women’s freestyle against Yuka Kagami of Japan, and Kyle Snyder is battling for bronze at 97 kg in men’s freestyle against the winner of the repechage between Amarali Azarpira of Iran and Alisher Yergali of Kazakhstan.
We start with five repechage matches. One repechage match at 65 kg will not happen. Zain Retherford of the USA announced last night that he has withdrawn due to medical precaution due to a head injury. Islam Dudaev of Albania advances to face Ismail Musukaev of Hungary for bronze.
