The U17 World Championships in Amman, Jordan, begins competition one week from today at the Princess Sumaya Bint al-Hasan. The first style to be contested at the tournament is Greco-Roman, which begins on August 19.
The U17 Greco-Roman World Team members were determined at the 2024 Pritchard Companies U.S. Open in April, with a best-of-three championship series finalizing the roster.
At 60 kg, 2023 U17 World Greco-Roman champion Jordyn Raney of Union County High School in Kentucky returns to the World stage looking to defend his title. Raney has built a strong resume, earning titles at the U.S. Open in the U17 division in both 2023 and 2024. He also earned a top finish at the 2022 USMC 16U Nationals in Greco-Roman, and finished fifth in freestyle. Raney will also compete in men’s freestyle at the U17 World Championships later in the week.
Along with Raney, Domenic Munaretto of Illinois qualified for both the 2024 U17 Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle World Teams. Munaretto, the 2022 U17 World freestyle champion at 45 kg, will compete internationally in Greco-Roman for the second time. He previously won gold at the 2022 U17 Pan American Championships in both Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle. In Jordan, Munaretto is slated to compete at 51 kg.
Emmit Sherlock, another dual medalist at the 2024 U17 Pan-American Championships with gold in freestyle and bronze in Greco-Roman, will compete at 80 kg in Amman. Sherlock showcased his versatility in both styles, winning U.S. Open titles in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. He completes the trio that will compete in both styles in Jordan, alongside Raney and Munaretto.
Two-time 16U Nationals Greco-Roman champion Loc Webber of Beast Mode Wrestling makes his World Championships debut at 45 kg. In June, Webber went 3-1 at the U17 Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, en route to a silver medal.
Hayden Schwab, who claimed titles in both Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps 16U Nationals, is another key member of the team, showcasing his excellence in both styles. Schwab earned the spot on his first World Team in April, finishing atop the podium in a challenging 48 kg bracket.
Jayden Raney will compete at 55 kg, joining his twin brother Jordyn on the World Team. He claimed his spot on the team with a top finish at the US Open in Greco-Roman, and finished third in men’s freestyle. This will be Raney’s first international competition, though he has been competing at top events around the United States since 2013.
Colton Weiler of Askren Wrestling Academy, who earned runner-up honors at the 2023 U.S. Marine Corps 16U Nationals in Greco-Roman, will compete at 65 kg, adding depth and experience to the team. Weiler placed third in the U15 division in Greco-Roman in 2022, and fourth in the U17 Greco-Roman division in 2023, before securing the top spot at the 2024 U17 Greco-Roman Nationals in April for the World Team berth.
Joseph Jeter, a standout from Edmond, Oklahoma, captured gold in both Greco-Roman and freestyle at the 2024 U17 Pan American Championships and will compete at 71 kg, solidifying his place as one of the top young wrestlers in the country. Holding a record of 3-0 with two technical falls and a pin, Jeter was presented the Golden Boot award as the outstanding Greco-Roman wrestler at the Pan American Championships in June.
Evan McGuire, who won gold in Greco-Roman at the 2024 U17 Pan American Championships and finished fifth in men’s freestyle at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals, will represent the U.S. at 92 kg. McGuire's strength and versatility will be crucial in his pursuit of gold at this event.
At 110 kg, Trayvn Boger of Sanderson Wrestling Academy, a 2024 U17 Pan-American Championships gold medalist in Greco-Roman, will take on the challenge at the U17 World Championships. Boger is a two-time Fargo All-American, finishing seventh in both styles in 2023. He placed second at the 2023 U17 Greco-Roman Nationals, before securing a World Team berth with a first-place finish in 2024.
