U.S. women’s freestylers receive draws for U17 World Championships in Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan – The U.S. wrestlers competing in the women’s freestyle division at the 2024 U17 World Championships have received their draws.

The group is led by a pair of 2023 U17 World champions, Morgan Turner at 46 kg and Piper Fowler at 73 kg.

Turner, who won her U17 World title last year at 43 kg, opens against Medina Mambetsadykova of Kyrgyzstan. Turner could face 2024 U17 European champion Halilja Azimov of Germany in her second match. Her half-bracket includes two-time Asian U15 champion Yuu Katsume of Japan.

Fowler also opens against an athlete Kyrgyzstan, Aisanat Kalmamatova. If she wins, her next opponent will be tough, either 2023 U17 World silver medalist Lotta Englich of Germany or 2024 Asian U17 champion Mansi Lather of India. Fowler beat Englich in the U17 World finals last year.

Competing in her first age-group World Championships is Taina Fernandez, who won Pan American titles at the U15 and U17 levels already this year. Fernandez opens up at 61 kg against 2024 European U15 champion Ozdenur Ozmez of Turkey. Her second round opponent could be 2023 European U15 silver medalist Vavara Aliseyenka, an Individual Neutral Athlete.

2024 U17 Pan American champion Kaili Manuel awaits the winner of the preliminary bout between Ako Uchiyama of Japan and Maryam Abuhamada of Jordan at . Uchiyama was fifth in the 2023 U17 Worlds, while Abuhamada is a 2024 Arab Championships runner-up. Manuel, also a 2024 16U Nationals champion, could face 2024 Asian U17 champion Kajal of India in her second match.

Two-time U17 Pan American champion Francesca Gusfa will face 2023 European U15 bronze medalist Polina Timsina of Estonia in her first match at 40 kg. Gusfa’s half bracket includes 2024 European U17 champion Aleksandra Fedorova, an Individual Neutral Athlete.

At 53 kg, 2023 U17 Pan American champion Isabella Gonzales faces the winner of the preliminary between Myagmarbayar Uurtuya of Mongolia and Jinzi Emu of China. Uurtuya was second at the 2022 Asian U15 Championships.  Her half bracket has strong depth, including 2022 U17 World champion Muskan of India, plus 2024 European U17 medalists Fatima Bayramova of Azerbaijan and Mariya Khrushchova, an Individual Neutral Athlete.

The women’s freestyle competition begins on Wednesday and continues through Friday.
