2025 CLAW U.S. Open, with 4,400 entries already, to light up Las Vegas, April 23-27; Still time to register in all 14 tournaments

Registration is on fire for the 2025 CLAW U.S. Open, set for the Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas, April 23-27 in Las Vegas, Nev. There are currently over 4,400 entries registered for the U.S. Open, with many more expected in the upcoming days. It is projected to be one of the largest and most competitive U.S. Opens of all time.

This year’s U.S. Open will feature seven age divisions and 14 different tournaments. It also marks the return of the U.S. Senior Nationals in all three Olympic disciplines. There was no Senior division in the U.S. Open in 2024, as the Olympic Trials had already been held and its national qualifier had been held in December 2023.

There is still time for athletes to register for the U.S. Open in all divisions. Test yourself at one of the most respected wrestling events of the year!

The age-groups and tournaments that will be held at the U.S. Open this year include:

• Senior (Born 2007 or Before): Men's Freestyle, Women's Freestyle, Greco-Roman
• U20 Men (2005-2008): Freestyle, Greco-Roman
• Girls HS Showcase (Born 9/1/05 & After, plus enrolled in 9-12 grade): Freestyle
• U17 Men (2008-2010): Freestyle, Greco-Roman
• U15 Men (2010-2012): Freestyle, Greco-Roman
• UWW Futures Men (2013-2015): Freestyle, Greco-Roman
• Masters Men A (1991-2000), B (1983-1990), C (1975-1982), D (1967-1974), E (1959-1966), F (1950-1958): Freestyle, Greco-Roman

The Senior division is already loaded, So far, six past Olympic or World medalists have signed up for the Senior division: 2024 Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades (68 kg WFS), plus two-time Senior World medalist James Green (70 kg MFS) and past Senior World medalists Daton Fix (61 kg MFS), Yianni Diakomihalis (70 kg MFS), Zahid Valencia (86 kg MFS) and Jennifer Page (65 kg WFS).

The Senior Greco-Roman Nationals will determine the 2025 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team which will compete in Zagreb, Croatia in September. The Greco-Roman finals will be a best-of-three series, Included in the registration at this time are 2016 Olympian Ellis Coleman (63 kg), 2020 Olympians Ildar Hafizov (63 kg) and Alejandro Sancho (72 kg) plus 2024 Olympians Kamal Bey (77 kg), Payton Jacobson (87 kg), Josef Rau (97 kg) and Adam Coon (130 kg).

The Senior and Age Group National Tournaments at the U15, U17 and U20 levels are part of the qualifying process for the age-appropriate World Team and Pan American Championships. There are three tournaments at the U.S. Open which will directly determine a U.S. World Team: Senior Greco-Roman, U17 Men’s Freestyle, U17 Greco-Roman.

The United States had 11 age-group World champions in 2024, and nine of them are already registered to compete in the U.S. Open, many in different age-groups than last year. Jayden Raney, a 2024 U17 Greco-Roman World champion, will compete in Greco-Roman in two divisions, the Senior Nationals and the U20 Nationals. Domenic Munaretto, a 2024 U17 World champion in men’s freestyle, will wrestle in the Senior Nationals and the U20 Nationals in freestyle.

Samuel Sanchez, a 2024 U17 World champion, returns to the U17 Nationals seeking to earn a spot on another U17 World Team. Taina Fernandez, a 2024 U17 World champion in women’s freestyle, is entered in the Girls National High School Recruiting Showcase. Michael Mocco, a 2024 U17 World champion in men’s freestyle, is moving up to the U20 Nationals. Four 2024 women’s freestyle age-group World champions are entered in the U.S. Senior Nationals this year, 2024 U20 World champion Jasmine Robinson, plus 2024 U23 World champions Sage Mortimer, Kylie Welker and Yelena Makoyed.

The Girls National High School Recruiting Showcase returns for the fourth year. This event is in freestyle wrestling, which is the collegiate style for women, and will be watched closely by college coaches and recruiters. Four 2024 Recruiting Showcase champions are registered at this point to seek a repeat title: Jaclyn Bouzakis (100), Emma Bacon (125), Louise Juitt (140) and Tilisa Matakaiongo (235).

The Masters Nationals will showcase adult wrestlers in six different divisions, with competition in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Last year, there were 11 Masters double champions, winners in both styles, and six are already registered to compete again this year: Garret Johnson (Div. B at 130 kg), Carson Gainey (Div. D at 58 kg), Charles Jones (Div. E at 100 kg), Bruce Moe (Div. F at 70 kg), Steve Contarino (Div. F at 88 kg) and Ron Cole (100 kg Div. F at 100 kg).

With many days left before the event, the size of the field and the number of talented competitors is expected to increase even more.  There will be a more in-depth review of the field in upcoming preview articles.
