LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 3 Oklahoma State, led by six semifinalists, has jumped to an early lead after day one of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational that features 30 programs from around the nation.
In the quarterfinals, Eddie Ventresca (Virginia Tech), the fifth seed, secured a victory against fourth-seed Tanner Jordan (South Dakota State) at 125 pounds. An upset came at 133 pounds when Jacob Van Dee (Nebraska) knocked off top seed Dylan Ragusin (Michigan) in a 10-4 match. Nic Bouzakis (Ohio State), a 2023 U20 World bronze medalist, fell in a close match to Zeth Romney (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals, but bounced back and will face Ragusin in the next session.
Quarterfinal action at 141 pounds saw Jesse Mendez (Ohio State), a returning champion from 2023 and a 2024 NCAA champion, advance with a clutch third-period takedown to beat Sam Latona (Virginia Tech), 5-1. Mendez meets Joshua Koderhandt (Navy) in the semifinals tomorrow.
At 149 pounds, the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals, including reigning NCAA champion Caleb Henson (Virginia Tech) and his 2023 finals opponent Ridge Lovett (Nebraska). Pending a pair of semifinal wins, fans could see a rematch between these two strong competitors. In 2023, Lovett defeated Henson 4-3 in the championship match.
In the first round this morning, Jack Thomsen (Northern Iowa) delivered a first-round upset over Terrell Barraclough (Utah Valley), winning 10-5. Thomsen’s run to the title was ended in the quarterfinals when Cameron Amine (Oklahoma State) secured a 4-1 decision over the Panther. No. 10 seed Bubba Wilson (Nebraska) stunned No. 2 seed Sammy Sasso (Ohio State) with a 6-4 win to reach the semifinals.
Barraclough has pushed his way through the consolation bracket, keeping his hopes for a third place finish alive. He will meet 2023 U17 World bronze medalist Brock Mantanona (Michigan) in his next match on Saturday.
The 174-pound bracket saw Garrett Thompson (Ohio) topple top seed Cade DeVos (South Dakota State) in a 10-7 quarterfinal upset. At 184 pounds, 2023 U23 World Team member and 2024 NCAA finalist Dustin Plott (Oklahoma State) advanced to the semifinals with a dominant 19-4 technical fall over James Rowley (Purdue); while reigning NCAA champion Parker Keckeisen (Northern Iowa) advanced to the semis and will face Evan Bockman (Iowa State) on Saturday.
Jacob Cardenas (Michigan), a three-time U23 World medalist, breezed into the semifinals at 197 pounds with a 16-1 tech fall over Christian Carroll (Iowa State) on Friday night, setting up a semifinal bout against Andy Smith (Virginia Tech).
At 285 pounds, U23 World Champions Wyatt Hendrickson (Oklahoma State) and Isaac Trumble (NC State) advanced to the semifinals in Las Vegas on opposite sides of the bracket. Trumble faces a challenge in Cohlton Schultz (Arizona State) in the next round, a Senior National Team member and age-group Greco-Roman World Champion who pinned him earlier this season at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic.
After the first two sessions, Oklahoma State leads the team race with 105 points. Nebraska follows in second place after day one with 83.5 points. In third is 2023 champion Iowa State with 71.5 points. Ohio State sits in fourth with 69 points, and Northern Iowa has earned 62.5 team points to round out the top five.
