Iowa gets three champs, North Central tops team standings at loaded North Central Women’s Invite

NAPERVILLE, Illinois – The North Central Women’s Invitational proved to be one of the best college Open events of the year, showcasing many of the best athletes and teams in women’s college wrestling.

NCAA No. 1 Iowa had the most individual champions with three: Nanea Estrella (138A), Macey Kilty (145) and Kylie Welker (180).

Five of the individual champions are currently ranked No. 1 in either the NCAA or the NAIA.

Kilty and Welker are getting their college seasons rolling after winning Senior World bronze medals for Team USA in Tirana, Albania. Welker, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA, scored a 10-0 technical fall over NCAA #2 Brittyn Corbishley of North Central. Kilty, not yet ranked in the NCAA, beat Senior-level star Alara Boyd, 8-0. Estrella, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA, defeated USOPTC resident athlete Skylar Hattendorf in the finals, 3-0.

Host North Central, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA, had a pair of individual champions and scored the most team points in the tournament with 251 points, ahead of Iowa with 148.5 points. Rounding out the top five were NCAA #5 McKendree in third with 148 points, NCAA No. 3 King in fourth with 97 points and NCAA #7 Lindenwood in fifth with 93.5 points.

North Central champions were NCAA No. 2 Sydney Petzinger (117A) and NCAA No. 1 Amani Jones (124A). Petzinger dominated NCAA No. 5 Caitlyn Jackson of Lindenwood in an 11-0 technical fall. Jones, a two-time age-group World medalist, stopped USOPTC resident athlete and past U.S. Open champion Tiare Ikea, 8-4.

The other team with two individual champions was King, with NCAA No. 3 Samara Chavez (119) and NCAA No. 1 Cheyenne Bowman (160A) reaching the top of the podium. Chavez stopped NCAA No. 4 Kendra Ryan of North Central in a 10-0 technical fall. Bowman stopped USOPTC resident athlete and past Senior National Team member Skylar Grote, 4-2.

There were two finals bouts which featured the No. 1 wrestlers in the NCAA and NAIA battling each other. In both cases, the NAIA wrestler earned the victory.

At 103 pounds, NAIA No. 1 Erin Hikiji of the University of Providence was dominant in a 13-2 technical fall over NCAA No. 1 Rianne Murphy of Iowa.

At 131 pounds, NAIA No. 1 and three-time NAIA national champion Carolina Moreno of Southern Oregon defeated NCAA No. 1 Sara Sterner of North Central, 12-6.

The individual champion at 207 pounds was NCAA No. 3 Sara Lake of Lindenwood, who defeated Alivia White of Iowa, 3-0.

A majority of the placewinners in the 10 weight classes are currently nationally ranked in college, along with some talented Senior level athletes, as well as a number of high school stars. This tournament will have a huge impact on the college rankings moving forward.
