Iowa powers 10 into semifinals to lead Minnesota at the Soldier Salute for men

CORALVILLE, Iowa – No. 2 Iowa put 10 athletes into Monday’s semifinals round to take the lead in the team standings among men’s teams at the Soldier Salute.

Iowa’s semifinalists are Joey Cruz (125), Drake Ayala (133), Kale Peterson (133), Kyle Parco (149), Michael Caliendo (165), Patrick Kennedy (174), Angelo Ferrari (184), Gabe Arnold (184), Stephen Buchanan (197) and Ben Kueter (285). In the two weights where Iowa has two in the semifinals, the athletes are on opposite sides of the bracket.

Iowa had 111 points at the conclusion of day one, with No. 7 Minnesota in second with 69 points. Rounding out the top five teams were No. 13 Iowa State with 68.5 points, No. 14 South Dakota State with 68 points and No. 10 Northern Iowa with 63 points.

Minnesota pushed six into the semifinals, Vance Vombaur (141), Tommy Askey (157), Blaine Brenner (165), Andrew Sparks (165), Isaiah Salazar (197) and Bennett Tabor (285).

The five South Dakota State semifinalists are Logan Swensen (133), Tyson Peach (141), Julian Tagg (141), Marcus Espinoza-Owens (165) and Brock Fettig (184).

Iowa only faces Minnesota one time in the semifinals, at 165 pounds, where Hawkeye Michael Caliendo battles Gopher Blaine Brenner.

There were 18 college teams entered which are scoring points in the tournament. No. 3 Oklahoma State had a few entries and pushed two into the semifinals, Jersey Robb (184) and Cody Merrill (197).

Monday's competition starts at 11 a.m. and the action will be streamed live on B1G+.
