NEWTON, Iowa — Lou DePrez, who is in his seventh year of wrestling at Binghamton University (N.Y.), is among the eight NCAA Division I wrestlers who are new to the Feb. 12 WIN Magazine national rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

DePrez, who placed eighth in the 2021 NCAAs, is currently 17-1 on the season and is ranked 13th at 197 pounds. He is a graduate student from Hilton, N.Y. After redshirting as a true freshman in 2018, he earned two additional years after dealing with injuries last season and a COVID year from 2020.

Other newcomers to this week’s rankings are Arizona State’s Richard Figueroa (20th at 125) and Jesse Vasquez (18th at 133), Illinois’s Tony Madrigal (20th at 133), Oklahoma’s Willie McDougald (19th at 149), Oregon State’s Cleveland Belton (17th at 141), Purdue’s Joey Blaze (20th at 157) and Stanford’s Jaden Abas (20th at 149).

Two-time NCAA defending champion Penn State (9-0) remains No. 1 in both WIN’s dual rankings and Tournament Power Index, going into tonight’s home dual with Rutgers. The Nittany Lions feature 10 ranked wrestlers, including five rated at No. 1: Beau Bartlett (141), Levi Haines (157), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (Hwt).

Oklahoma State (13-0), the division’s only other undefeated team, remained No. 2 in both the dual rankings and TPI and also feature 10 ranked wrestlers, including a pair of No. 2-ranked wrestlers: Daton Fix (133) and Dustin Plott (184).

Rounding out the Top 5 in WIN’s dual rankings are No. 3. Iowa and No. 4. Iowa State and No. 5 Missouri. Rated third through fifth in the TPI are N.C. State, Iowa and Cornell.

WIN’s TPI predicts how high a team would finish in this year’s NCAA Division I Championships based on a point total associated with individual placement and advancement points that could be scored at the 2024 NCAAs.

The following is a breakdown of those points: 20 for 1st place, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by one and a half points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and one point for those ranked 17-20.

Also, it should be noted that WIN’s individual rankings are not necessarily simply an update of recent wins and losses, but more of a prediction at this point in the season of where wrestlers would be seeded at the 2024 NCAAs, which will be held in Kansas City, Mo., in March, if that event was held now.
