The U.S. Greco-Roman team poses after the U20 Pan American Championships.
U.S. wins seven Greco-Roman golds, Rix McElhinney awarded Golden Boot at U20 Pan American Championships
by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling
LIMA, Peru – Team USA dominated the opening day of the U20 Pan American Championships at Villa Deportiva Nacional in Lima, Peru, claiming seven gold medals and one bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Defending heavyweight champion and 2022 U20 World bronze medalist Aden Attao exuded dominance of his bracket with four decisive victories—two pins and two shutout technical falls. Due to the nature of round robin bracketing, Attao wound up defeating silver medalist Jorawar Dhinsa of Canada twice, both times by fall near the one-minute mark. He also earned an 11-0 win over Luis De La Rosa Arteaga of Mexico and a 10-0 victory over Wesley Barros Das Dores of Brazil to round out his performance.
Four more U.S. athletes won every match with bonus points— Isaiah Cortez at 55 kg, Brennan Van Hoecke at 67 kg, Aydin Rix McElhinney at 77 kg and Arian Khosravy at 82 kg. Van Hoecke and Khosravy did not surrender a single match point to the opposition. Cortez and Rix McElhinney each won five matches on their way to gold medals, which is tied for the most of any competitor in the tournament. Rix McElhinney was presented the Golden Boot award as the outstanding wrestler of the Greco-Roman tournament.
Also claiming gold medals for Team USA were Otto Black at 63 kg and Brett Back at 72 kg. Black picked up two technical falls and a tough 2-0 decision against Zachary Marrero of Puerto Rico on the day. Back made a name for himself as a pinner, with three falls in four matches wrestled.
Bronze medal earner at 97 kg, Soren Herzog, rounds out the list of American medalists. He went 3-1, scoring three impressive technical fall wins, including a 9-0 victory over Kyle Santana Oliveira of Brazil in the bronze medal match.
Nick Nosler wound up in fifth place at 87 kg after falling to gold medalist Brian Ruiz Marin of Venezuela and silver medalist Kauan Ferreira Gomes of Brazil in his round robin pool. 60 kg entrant Cory Land was unable to compete on Thursday.
All told, the U.S. men gathered a 31-3 combined record with seven victories by pin and 23 by technical fall.
Team USA easily ran away with the team standings at 200 points. Peru finished in second place with 140 points. Mexico rounded out the top three with 109 points.
The tournament continues at 10 a.m. local time tomorrow with the women’s freestyle competition. Lima, Peru, is located one hour behind U.S. Eastern Time.
Brackets for each style and match-by-match results are available on UWW Arena. A live stream of the event can be found at FloWrestling.com.
