U.S. wins eight women’s freestyle golds, 10-for-10 on medals at U20 Pan American Championships

by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling

LIMA, Peru – Team USA continued its hot streak at the U20 Pan American Championships boasting eight champions and 10 total medalists in women’s freestyle on Friday at Lima’s Villa Deportiva Nacional.

Returning champion Ella Schmit went back-to-back with a picturesque performance at 65 kg to spearhead the U.S. effort. The Iowa Hawkeye college star picked up two pins and two shutout technical falls on her way to the gold medal. She stuck Mexico’s Michelle Olea Ruiz at the 1:06 mark of the championship bout to punctuate her day.

The most dominant performance of the tournament goes to 76 kg champion Kalila Shrive, who went four-for-four on pins without surrendering a single match point to her opposition. Her fastest fall came in 19-seconds against Brazil’s Maria De Almeida Dos Santos. Notably, she wound up pinning silver medalist Rupinder Johal of Canada twice on Friday, the first occurrence in her opening bout at the 1:25 mark and the second time for the gold medal in 4:58.

Two more U.S. athletes impressively won every match with bonus points—Julianna Ocampo at 59 kg and Aubre Krazer at 59 kg. Also claiming gold medals for Team USA were Clare Booe at 53 kg, Everest Leydecker at 57 kg, Destiny Rodriguez at 68 kg and Shannon Workinger at 72 kg.

The U.S. picked up a pair of additional podium finishes to complete a 10-for-10 medal haul in women’s freestyle. 2019 U17 World silver medalist Skylar Hattendorf went 2-2 at 62 kg to end up with the silver medal in round robin play. Colorado native Janessa George rebounded from an opening round loss to wrestle back for bronze at 55 kg.

All told, the U.S. women gathered a 30-4 combined record with 19 victories by pin and six by technical fall.

Team USA cruised to the team title with 235 team points. Mexico finished in second place with 164 team points. Canada rounded out the top three with 120 team points.

The tournament resumes at 10 a.m. local time tomorrow with the men’s freestyle competition. Lima, Peru, is located one hour behind U.S. Eastern Time.

Brackets for each style and match-by-match results are available on UWW Arena. A live stream of the event can be found at FloWrestling.com.
