U.S. sweeps all 10 men’s freestyle golds, Mirasola awarded Golden Boot to wrap U20 Pan American Championships

by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling

LIMA, Peru – Team USA imposed its will on the final day of the U20 Pan American Championships at Villa Deportiva Nacional in Lima, Peru, sweeping all 10 gold medals in men’s freestyle wrestling.

A pair of U20 World medalists led the U.S. charge by earning repeat bids. U20 World finalist and U17 World champion Luke Lilledahl posted three 10-0 technical falls at 57 kg to pick up his third Pan American freestyle title, and second-straight at the U20 level. 2023 U20 World bronze medalist Camden McDanel also went the 10-0 tech route in each of his three contested bouts to claim his second-consecutive gold at 97 kg.

Earning the Golden Boot award as the tournament’s outstanding wrestler was 92 kg champion Connor Mirasola. He defeated every wrestler in his six-man round-robin bracket by way of technical fall without giving up a point, outscoring his opponents by a combined 51-0 score. Mirasola didn’t have a match extend beyond the first period.

Four more Americans navigated to gold medals by notching all bonus-point wins without surrendering a match point—William Dekraker at 61 kg, PJ Duke at 70 kg, Ladarion Lockett at 74 kg and Aeoden Sinclair at 86 kg. The quartet combined to wrestle 14 matches, earned 14 technical falls and outscored the opposition 143-0. Lockett and Sinclair were members of last year’s U17 World Team where Lockett became a World champion at 71 kg and Sinclair placed eighth at 92 kg.

2021 U17 World champion Bo Bassett posted a pin and two technical falls on his way to the 65 kg title. He defeated Mexico’s Diego Peraza Aguilar, 11-1, in the gold medal match. Bassett also holds a Pan American title from the U17 age division.

Two-time U17 World bronze medalist Zack Ryder and 2023 U17 World Team member in Greco-Roman Nicholas Sahakian also brought home gold medals for Team USA. Ryder went 4-0 at 79 kg with three technical falls and a decision, without giving up a point, on his way to gold. Sahakian went 4-0 with a pin, a pair of technical falls, and a 12-7 decision over Mexico’s Nicolas Santacruz Rabago to cement his place atop the podium.

All told, the U.S. men gathered a 37-0 combined record with two victories by pin, 32 by technical fall, two by decision and one by forfeit. Eight-of-10 Americans went unscored upon throughout the event.

Team USA pitched a perfect score in the team standings at 250 points to take the title. Canada finished in second place with 127 team points. Brazil rounded out the top three with 114 team points.

Lilledahl, Bassett, Duke, Lockett, Ryder and Mirasola will all represent the U.S. at the U20 World Championships this September in Pontevedra, Spain.
