QUERETARO, Mexico – On day one of the U23 Pan American Championships in Queretaro, Mexico, the United States had an impressive showing in Greco-Roman, securing second place overall in the team race with a total of seven medals.
The first gold medal of the tournament was won in the morning session, after Adrian Artsisheuskiy went 2-0 in group action at 82 kg. In his opening match, Artsisheuskiy pinned Omar Mendoza De Ramon of Mexico in just 56 seconds. Artsisheuskiy used an 8-0 technical fall over Maximo Cabrera of Argentina in round two for the top finish.
At 77 kg, Hunter Garvin secured the second gold medal of the tournament with a win over Joenni Gomez Taquechel of Cuba. Garvin scored early with a back exposure for 4, but it was adjusted to 2-1 after a challenge from Cuba’s corner. A step-out made it 3-1 for Garvin entering the break. In the second period, Garvin hit a one-arm headlock for four points, taking a 7-1 lead. After another challenge from Cuba, his lead extended to 8-1. Gomez Taquechel added two takedowns late, but Garvin held on to win gold, 8-5.
Garvin was also awarded the Golden Boot, given to the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. On Saturday, Garvin is set to compete at 74 kg in men’s freestyle.
Keith Miley, competing at 130 kg, went 3-0 en route to a gold medal finish on Thursday. Miley’s first two matches were won by fall, both in under a minute. Miley pinned Ayden Williams of Barbados in 21 seconds, before pinning Jose Nunez Encarnacion of the Dominican Republic in 34 seconds in the semifinals. Miley’s 5-1 victory in the finals propelled him to gold, marking his second gold medal at a U23 Pan American Championships.
A trio of Americans took silver in their respective weight classes, Jonathan Gurule at 63 kg, Richard Fedalen at 67 kg and Clay Radenz at 72 kg.
In round three, Gurule started strong with a 1-0 lead, but his opponent, Sebastian Bustamante Mejias of Chile, responded with a takedown to go up 2-1, then added a step out for a 3-1 score. Gurule came back with a big four-point move to lead 5-3 at the break. In the second, Bustamante Mejias made it 5-4 with a step out, but Gurule countered an arm spin to land on top for two. After a failed challenge from Chile, Gurule secured the 8-4 win.
Facing Yonat Veliz Martinez of Cuba for gold, Fedalen went up 3-0 with a passivity call and gut wrench. Veliz Martinez responded, tying it 3-3 and taking the lead on criteria. A late passivity call against Fedalen made it 4-3, and he took home silver at 67 kg.
In round three at 72 kg, Radenz took a 1-0 lead on passivity, followed by a big throw to make it 5-0 over Arnoldo Proboste of Argentina. After the break, Proboste got on the board, but Radenz answered with a step-out and a four-point throw. Argentina challenged and lost, pushing Radenz to a convincing 11-2 victory.
Winning bronze was Davian Guanajuato at 55 kg. Guanajuato picked up a 9-5 lead entering the second period, and four consecutive step outs ended the match early as Guanajauto won 13-5 over Isaac Marin Mata of Mexico.
Jakason Burks, wrestling at 60 kg, fell in his bronze medal match, 8-0. His opponent, Dieymer Rosal Amundaray of Venezuela, scored early with a takedown off an arm spin, followed by another takedown to go up 4-0. Burks tried a throw, but the referee awarded Rosal Amundaray two more points. Rosal Amundaray then added a turn to seal the match 8-0, and Burks placed fifth.
In the bronze medal match at 87 kg, Tyson Beauperthuy placed fifth after falling to Cristian Pelegrino Estalella of Cuba, 8-0.
At 97 kg, Michael Altomer dropped a close 9-9 criteria decision to Ebian Gonzalez Valdes of Cuba. Gonzalez Valdes failed to advance to the finals, ending Altomer’s tournament. He finishes seventh in Queretaro.
