Record girls turn-out for Fargo Summer Beach Showcase; Virginia takes home team title among 33 states entered

FARGO, N.D. – It was a great afternoon in Fargo on Sunday, and a record 167 Junior and 16U girls entered the 3^rd annual Fargo Summer Showcase and 16U/Junior Beach Nationals at Gastropub Volleyball. They represented a record 33 states, which brought athletes to compete in the sand.

Virginia won the title with 52 points, edging runner-up Georgia with 50 points. Tied in third were 2023 champion Arizona and Utah, both with 42 points.

Virginia had 12 of its 13 entries win a medal, including four individual champions: Sarina Gunn (Junior 100), Mia Goodwin (Junior 110), Cameron Millsapps (Junior 155) and Mahalia Adams (190).

Georgia had eight medalists, but an impressive six champions: Cadence Grulla (16U 88), Ella Wells (16U 106), Ella Hughes (16U 130), Jeleesa Whaley (Junior 105), Kori Campbell (Junior 135) and Madison Cooley (Junior 145).

There were 15 different states that crowned at least one individual champion:

6 – Georgia

4 – Virginia

2 – Maryland, Utah, New York, Michigan

1 – West Virginia, Nebraska, Hawaii, Ohio, Idaho, Montana, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois,

Among the many entries were current and past All-Americans in women’s freestyle, as well as a number of girls who are nationally ranked at the high school level on the mat.

There was a high-level battle between World Beach medalists in the Junior 130-pound bracket, as 2022 U17 Beach World bronze medalist Ciara Riner of West Virginia pinned 2023 U17 World Beach champion Kennedie Snow of North Carolina in 1:11. Riner advanced to the finals, but was pinned in the finals by nationally ranked Lexie Pabon of Maryland in 1:36.

Any of the girls who wrestled on Sunday who wish to compete on the U.S. team at the U17 and U20 Beach Worlds in Katerini-Pierra, Greece, September 19-20.

The USA can enter three athletes in each weight class at the World Championships. Currently there are openings at the following weight classes:

U17 Women: 40 kg, 50 kg, 70 kg

U20 Women: 50 kg, 60 kg,

U17 Men: 50 kg, 60 kg, 70 kg, 80 kg

U20 Men: 70 kg, Over 90 kg

The boys 16U and Junior Beach event in Fargo is scheduled for Thursday. July 18. Check-in at Gastropub Billiards and Volleyball will be at 8:30 a.m., with competition scheduled from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 12:00 noon.
