HERRIMAN, Utah – Iowa repeated as 16U National Greco-Roman Duals champions after a 40-30 victory over a scrappy and talented California team in the finals dual.
California started with a technical fall victory at 88 pounds, with Thales Silva scoring an 8-0 technical fall over Damien Yeoman. It was the only time California led in the dual meet.
Iowa took early command of the dual meet with four consecutive technical falls from 2016 U16 Nationals champion Hayden Schwab (106), along with Chase Watkinson (94), Urijah Courter (100) and Alexander Pierce (113). Combined, these four wrestlers outscored their California opponents 25-1, jumping Iowa to a 16-5 lead.
The Iowa run did not end there, as Gavin Landers beat Rene Cordero, 5-2 at 120 pounds, making the team score 19-6. Iowa’s five-match win streak was snapped at 126 pounds, when Daniel Benavides of California hits some big moves and defeated Cael Vandermark of Iowa, 7-4.
After an Iowa win at 132 by Dawson Youngblut, California tightened the match by winning six of the final nine matches.
The California comeback began with a 6-2 win by Ames-Michael Hoevker over Justis Jesuroga at 138 and victory at 144 by Gregory Torosian over Dylan Colleran, 4-0. Iowa came back with wins by Maximus Dhabolt (150) and Jaxon Miller (157). California rallied for two more wins, as Bailey Holman won an 8-0 technical fall at 165, and Isai Fernandez edged Brayden Koester, 3-2 at 175.
A technical fall win by Broedy Hendricks of Iowa at 190 sealed the win. California closed it out with victories at 215 by David Calkins and by Noah Larios at 285.
Iowa reached the finals by winning three Pool A matches, including a clincher over regular rival Illinois, 39-28. California’s Pool B victories were all by substantial margins over Oklahoma Outlaws Red, Utah Gold and Washington.
Illinois placed third with a 49-37 victory over Utah Gold. Illinois won four of the last six matches in the dual meet in the upper weights to close out the win, including a pin by Roman Villalobos at 190 and a technical fall by Ismael Bereket at 157.
Minnesota Blue defeated Washington, 49-24 to place fifth, winning eight of the final nine matches of the dual meet. Included were 10 victories with bonus points.
Placing seventh was Missouri, a 51-25 win over the Oklahoma Outlaws Red. Missouri won the last six matches of the dual meet, all bonus point victories.
The 16U National Duals resume on Friday with the freestyle competition. Iowa is the defending champion in freestyle as well.
All of the action will be broadcast live once again by FloWrestling https://flosports.link/4bLp2ft
