WESTFIELD, Ind.— Day one of freestyle at the 16U Freestyle Women’s National Duals was filled with action, as the preliminary pools were completed. Pennsylvania Blue (Pool A), Texas Blue (Pool B), Oklahoma (Pool C) and California (Pool D) were the preliminary pool winners.
No. 1 seed Pennsylvania Blue dominated Pool A, starting their campaign with a 57-6 victory over Iowa. Pennsylvania Blue defeated Florida by a score of 50-15 in round two. In round three, they defeated Kansas 57-7, and in round four they brought down Tennessee 42-24. In a key final-round match, Pennsylvania Blue defeated Ohio Blue 47-20 to claim the top spot in the pool.
No. 2 seed Texas Blue finished in the top spot in Pool B. The team began their tournament with a 53-17 victory over Georgia and maintained their momentum, defeating North Dakota 55-17 in round two. In round three, Texas Blue secured a 56-11 win over Michigan. In the final round, Texas Blue solidified their first-place finish in Pool B by defeating Illinois 46-26, ending day one undefeated.
In Pool C, No. 3 seed Oklahoma claimed the top spot with consistent victories. They opened the tournament with a 45-26 win over Virginia in round one and a 48-21 win over Pennsylvania Red in round two. Oklahoma’s offense was on display in a 68-4 victory over Arkansas. In the fourth round, they defeated Ohio Red 43-25. Oklahoma narrowly defeated Indiana in the fifth round, outscoring them 34-32 with eight wins, as Riley Samarripa secured Oklahoma’s win with a 13-3 technical fall at 170 pounds.
Fifth-seeded California finished as the top team in Pool D, going 4-0 on day one. California had a first-round bye, and got their tournament started with a 49-18 win over Missouri. They were dominant in a 65-2 win over Texas Red, winning very match including seven by fall. In round four, California defeated Minnesota 49-16. In the final dual of the day, California took down No. 4 seed Wisconsin 40-29, securing the first place finish in the pool.
No. 8 Ohio Blue (Pool A), No. 7 Illinois (Pool B), No. 6 Indiana (Pool C) and No. 4 Wisconsin (Pool D) finished second in their preliminary pools, and advanced to the Gold/Silver pool on day two.
