WESTFIELD, Indiana – With this being the inaugural year of the 16U Girls National Freestyle Duals, somebody had to emerge as the first team champion in history.
No. 1 seed Pennsylvania Blue, led by a balanced and talented lineup, stepped up in a big way, defeating Wisconsin 48-25 in the championship dual. Both teams had a number of girls who are in the National Girls High School rankings, but the depth of the Keystone State lineup proved too much to handle.
The first four matches of the dual meet were all pins, three by Pennsylvania Blue and one by Wisconsin. Securing falls for Pennsylvania were Morgan Hyland (106), national No. 8 Julia Horger (112) and national No. 2 Emma Bacon (124). Securing the early Wisconsin pin was Emjay Neumann (118).
Two of the next three matches went to Wisconsin, and each of the bouts had at least one nationally ranked wrestler.
National No. 21 Madilyn Peach of Wisconsin opened up her offense at 130, scoring a 14-3 technical fall over highly respected Julissa Ortiz. National No. 19 Riley Hanrahan of Wisconsin fell behind 5-2 to Ava Golding but scored the next eight points before getting the pin at 3:13.
In the only battle of two nationally ranked stars, No. 3 Violette Lasure of Pennsylvania secured a pin in 1:03 over No. 27 Harlow Skenandore at 142 pounds.
Lasure’s pin opened up a five-match win streak for Pennsylvania Blue, all bonus point wins. Scoring falls were Juliet Alt (155), Sierra Ripka (170) and Alaina Claassen (190), while Jameson Strickland (148) earned a technical fall. Claassen put away Evie Stine in just 11 seconds.
Wisconsin won their final two matches, with a pin from national No. 8 Brooke Huffman (235) and a forfeit win to national No. 8 Brynn Engel (88). Pennsylvania Blue closed out the dual in style, with a pair of technical falls from Makayla Smith (94) and national No. 2 Jaclyn Bouzakis (100).
Top-seeded Pennsylvania Blue controlled Gold/Silver Pool A and advance to the finals dual, with victories over Illinois, Indiana and California. No. 4 seed Wisconsin was the winner in Gold/Silver Pool B to advance to the finals, beating Oklahoma, Texas Blue and Ohio.
California scored five of the first victories and went on to a 45-22 victory over Ohio Blue for third place. Securing pins for California in the dual meet were Lauren Zaragoza (130), Ruby Dominguez (136), Julie Cimarusti (148) and Alyaah Bravo (94).
Fifth place went to Indiana, a 36-33 winner over a tough Oklahoma team. Indiana won four straight matches in the middle weights by Ava Strayer (124), Naima Ghaffar (130), Aubry Troustner (136) and national No. 19 Maddie Marsh (142) and led the rest of the way.
Texas Blue came home with seventh place, after defeating Illinois 43-24. Among the winners in the dual for Texas Blue was national No. 15 Camille Rainey at 136. Three Texas Blue wrestlers secured pins, Nevada Daniels (112), Jaida Kuntz (190) and Katelynn Dockery (100).
Pools also completed on Friday were the Bronze/Copper Pool (Places 9-16) and the Red/Blue Pool.
The tournament concludes on Saturday with the Greco-Roman division, held alongside the 14U Girls National Duals in Greco-Roman. Session times are 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
All of the action in both 16U and 14U divisions will be broadcast live by FloWrestling https://flosports.link/49x7MIx
