Makoyed wins silver medal in women’s freestyle at 76 kg at Poland Open

WARSAW, Poland –Yelena Makoyed (Orangevale, Calif./Cardinal WC/Titan Mercury WC) claimed a silver medal at 76 kg on the final day of women’s freestyle at the Poland Open on Saturday.

Makoyed had a 3-1 record in a five-athlete round robin. Among her three wins was a 13-3 technical fall over Zaineb Sghauer of Tunisia, a 2020 Olympian and two-time African Senior champion. She also scored a pin over Daniela Tkachuk of Poland and a 10-0 technical fall over Shenita Lawson of the United States. USA)

 

Makoyed was defeated by eventual champion Tatiana Renteria Renteria of Colombia, 12-5 in the opening round. Renteria, a 2013 Senior World bronze medalist and a 2022 U23 World champion, went 4-0 in the weight class.

Lawson (Euless, Texas/New York AC) finished with an 0-4 record and placed fifth at 76 kg.

The U.S. finished with six medals in women’s freestyle at the Poland Open, as Olympians Dom Parrish (gold at 53 kg) and Sarah Hildebrandt (silver at 53 kg) claimed medals on Thursday. The United States added three medals on Friday from Olympian Helen Maroulis (gold at 57 kg), plus Alex Hedrick (bronze at 57 kg) and Michaela Beck (bronze at 59 kg).

The United States came home with the second-place team trophy, although they only entered nine athletes in the tournament.
