Pennsylvania wins Greco-Roman team title at 16U Women’s National Duals

WESTFIELD, Ind.— The 2024 16U Women’s National Duals wrapped at the Grand Park Events Center on Saturday. Pennsylvania claimed the team title, bringing down Ohio 53-18 in the final dual.
The dual began with an explosive start at 94 pounds, as Makayla Smith of Pennsylvania pinned Olivia Whitlach of Ohio in just 25 seconds. The fall set the tone for the remainder of the dual, and the momentum continued as Pennsylvania secured the next eight-straight victories.
Pennsylvania’s dominance was clear in the dual, as Samiyah Rahming secured a pin against Isabella Ndinga Mbappe of Ohio in just 37 seconds at 118 pounds. At 124 pounds, Emma Bacon won by technical fall, defeating Kandice Spry 10-0. Julissa Ortiz continued the streak with a pin at 130 pounds in 47 seconds. Neve O’Byrne contributed with an 8-0 technical fall against Kiera Depinet at 136 pounds, and Violette Lasure pinned Janelle Donahue at 1:12 at 142 pounds.
Ohio managed to break Pennsylvania’s streak at 148 pounds, when Rylee Dearwester got to work and pinned Contessa Cotelesse in 17 seconds. However, Pennsylvania regained control with a fall at 155 pounds. Ohio saw another victory at 170 pounds when Elizabeth Madison pinned Sierra Ripka in 2:24.
Pennsylvania was unseeded in the initial PIN ratings released prior to the first whistle. Ohio was the No. 3 seed entering the tournament.
In the preliminary pools, it was champion Pennsylvania finishing first in Pool A, with No. 1 seed Texas Blue finishing second. Pool B saw Oklahoma in the top spot and No. 7 Kansas closely behind. The teams that advanced from Pool C were runner-up Ohio and Florida. Pool D champion No. 4 California and runner-up No. 5 Indiana also advanced to the Gold/Silver pool.
In the third place dual, California secured victory over Oklahoma 37-26, placing California third and Oklahoma fourth. The fifth place match saw Texas Blue defeating Florida 43-31. Indiana edged out Kansas 37-34 in the seventh place match.

USA Wrestling will announce the 16U Greco-Roman All-Tournament Team, athletes who went undefeated with a minimum of five wins, at the conclusion of the event.
