NJCAA Men's Wrestling Championships Schedule
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The team races are still very much in play after day one at the NJCAA National Championships on Friday.
Defending champion Western Wyoming leads the NJCAA Men’s Nationals with 103 points, slightly ahead of Iowa Central with 97.5 points in second. Pratt is in third with 93 points, with Clackamas and North Idaho tied in fourth at 91 points.
Western Wyoming has four wrestlers in the semifinals, with three left in the consolation rounds. Semifinalists for Western Wyoming are Bridger Ricks (125), Cody Phelps (133), Darion Johnson (184) and Dmarian Lopez (285)
Iowa Central has three semifinalists and three in consolations. Iowa Central’s semifinalists are Matt Sarbo (149), Darnai Heard (157) and Lawrence Rosario (174).
Pratt has the most semifinalists with five, but only one in the consolations. Pratt’s semifinalists are Easton Taylor (141), Gabe Maki (149), Cayleb Atkins (165), Blake Jouret (184) and Kaden Glass (197) .
Clackamas has four finalists and three in consolations. North Idaho has three in the semifinals and three in the consolations. Saturday morning will be huge in determining whether there will be much separation between these top teams.
Two returning national champions are in the semifinals, Matt Sarbo of Iowa Central (149) and Aziz Fayzullaev of Northwest (184). Fayzullaev won at 174 pounds last year.
In the NJCAA Women’s Invitational, Iowa Central, with 126.5 points, has a one point lead over returning national champion Indian Hills, with 125.5 points. Umpqua is in third with 113.5, followed by fourth place Iowa Western with 93.5 points and fifth place Snow with 88.5 points.
It will be very difficult for Iowa Central to hold onto its lead, since they have many fewer wrestlers competing on Saturday than Indian Hills. Iowa Central has seven in the semifinals and three in the consolation rounds, while Indian Hills has 14 in the semifinals and 2 in the consolation rounds.
All three of Indian Hills returning NJCAA individual national champions are in the semifinals, Dutchess King (101), Shammilka Miranda Diaz (116), and Eliana Bommarito (235). Bommarito was Outstanding Wrestler last year.
Other returning champions in the semifinals are Alexis Miller of Carl Albert State (109), Victoriana Kim of Southwestern Oregon (123), Ferny Hernandez of Iowa Western (155) and Zoey Smalley of Umpqua (170). Smalley won her title last year at 143 pounds.
