Match Notes: U23 World Championships Day Three

The 2024 U23 World Championships continue on Wednesday from Feti Borova Sports Hall in Tirana, Albania. The morning session features Greco-Roman group two (55-63-77-87-130 kg) repechage and the qualification rounds for women's freestyle group one (50-55-59-68-76 kg). The evening session will wrestle the women's freestyle group one semifinals followed by the Greco-Roman group two medal matches. Updates from each Team USA match can be found below.

87 kg Bronze Medal Match – Asan Zhanyshov (Kyrgyzstan) tech. fall Payton Jacobson (United States), 9-0

Jacobson hit for passivity first and is put underneath at the 4:38 mark of the first period. Zhanyshov has to work for his lock, is ultimately able to get it and attempts a throw, Jacobson only gives up two as they go out of bounds. Zhanyshov holds a 3-0 lead. Zhanyshov strikes on a lateral drop into a gutwrench to end the match by technical fall in the first period, 9-0.


55 kg Bronze Medal Match – Kohei Yamagiwa (Japan) tech. fall Billy Sullivan (United States), 11-1

A tight arm spin lands for Yamagiwa 54 seconds into the match to go up 4-0. The U.S. corner is challenging the call and loses, so it’s 5-0 in favor of Yamagiwa. Yamagiwa pulls a front headlock down for a takedown, making the score 7-0 with 33 seconds to go in the first period. An interesting exchange ends the match. Sullivan ducks underneath into a front headlock and appears to launch Yamagiwa for four, but it’s called the opposite direction. Without a challenge available, Sullivan falls to fifth place by an 11-1 technical fall loss in the first period.


76 kg SF – Yelena Makoyed (United States) fall Nodoka Yamamoto (Japan), 5:46

Head inside single for Makoyed, she gets caught underneath and tipped for neutral exposure and Yamamoto leads 2-0 early. Makoyed pressures through a single leg for a takedown to tie things up 2-2 halfway through the first period. Makoyed in a double leg going out of bounds, which is only called one point on the step out. The first period ends 3-2 in favor of Makoyed. Makoyed gets back to the crackdown position and this time exposes Yamamoto for two, twice, upping her advantage to 7-2. Makoyed comes back with another quick takedown to make it 9-2. Yamamoto goes for a front headlock roll and gets stopped by Makoyed, who turns the move into a power half to secure a pin with 14 seconds left in the match. It was 13-2 at the time of the pin for Makoyed.


55 kg SF – Zeltzin Hernandez Guerra (Mexico) fall Amani Jones (United States), 3:34

Double leg takedown for Hernandez Guerra to start the match. Jones comes back with a takedown, throws a hook by and nearly catches Hernandez Guerra on her back. Jones is able to get a tilt exposure and is close to converting on arm bar but no dice. A step out point for Jones ends the scoring in the first period at 5-2. Jones comes out chasing a single leg, gets pulled underneath from an overhook and pinned 34 seconds into the second period.


50 kg SF – Sage Mortimer (United States) fall Umi Ito (Japan), 2:27

Go-behind right off the whistle for Ito, transitions into a trapped-arm gutwrench but Mortimer holds it off. Mortimer trails 2-0 early. High-c takedown to the back for Ito. It’s a two-and-two exchange to make it 6-0 Ito 52 seconds into the match. Mortimer throws an underhook by to a single leg, steps over the top with a far side flanker, sinks in a power half but can’t quite get the turn. The score is now 6-2 at the 4:06 mark of the first period. Ito comes right back with a takedown-to-lace, combination. Mortimer counters the lace to the back and is able to lock down the pin with 33 seconds to go in the period. Mortimer was down 12-4 at the time of the fall.  


55 kg QF – Amani Jones (United States) dec. Roza Szenttamasi (Hungary), 9-3

Jones captures a single leg going out of bounds to open the scoring, 2-0. Szenttamasi is put on the shot clock with just over one minute to go in the first period. The shot clock expires giving Jones a 3-0 lead. Jones gets in deep on a low level single leg, brings it up to standing, trips going out of bounds for four points to up her lead to 7-0 at the break. A crotch lift exposure for Jones from neutral makes it 9-0. Step out point for Szenttamasi off a Jones shot attempt gets her on the board. Szenttamasi drives an underhook, Jones counters with headlock which is called a slip throw. Szenttamasi adds a step out point and Jones is hit for fleeing to make it a 9-3 final score.


68 kg QF – Nesrin Bas (Turkey) dec. Brooklyn Hays (United States), 10-4

Hays close to converting a high single leg attempt at the 4:14 mark of the first period, Bas dropped down to grounded before going out of bounds. Hays is put on the shot clock, Bas hits with a two-on-one dump for two exposure points. Hays goes out of bounds for a step out point. As the shot clock expires, double leg conversion for Bas, she goes for a turn on the edge and Hays counters for two points of her own. It’s 6-2 for Bas after that long flurry. Hays tries to throw a two-on-one by and gets countered for a takedown 2:12 to go in the match. An ankle-to-ankle 50-50 position goes Bas’ way as Hays exposes for two. Hays is able to get around behind for a takedown late, then goes for a bow-and-arrow and the official stops it. Bas takes her time getting up off the mat with one second left. Hays falls by a 10-4 final.


50 kg QF– Sage Mortimer (United States) tech. fall Laura Ganikyzy (Kazakhstan), 14-4

Seatbelt toss to the back for Mortimer gives her an early four-point advantage in the contest. Mortimer counters a shot attempt with some slick head in the hole defense for another takedown to go up 6-0. She goes for a gutwrench and gets stepped over for two. The first period ends 6-2 for Mortimer. Snap down go-behind for a Mortimer takedown to open the second frame. Mortimer goes for a underhook toss but gets countered for two, making the score 8-4. Ganikyzy tries to go fireman’s, Mortimer counters for another takedown. It’s 10-4 with 40 seconds to go. Mortimer throws a hook by for a third takedown and wraps it up with a go behind at the buzzer to get the 14-4 technical fall.


55 kg R16 – Amani Jones (United States) fall Ying Lu (China), 4:49

Swing single leg converts for Lu after Jones tried to get stingy with her defense, 2-0 early. Lu adds a go-behind takedown and transitions into a gutwrench for a score. Jones reverses on the gutwrench to make the score 6-1. Jones goes inside trip, Lu fights it off but ultimately goes over on the edge for four points, making the score 6-5 for Lu at the 3:56 mark in the first period. Jones pressures forward from a front headlock, pushes Lu over and is close to getting a fall but time runs out in the period. Jones takes a 9-6 lead to the break. Jones whips an underhook by for a takedown to open the second, then she goes power half with a near side flanker in for exposure points. Her lead is up to 13-6. A low ankle pick for Jones is countered by Lu for exposure points. Jones comes out on top in the exchange to secure a pin with 1:11 remaining in the second period.


76 kg QF – Yelena Makoyed (United States) fall Mariia Orlevych (Ukraine), 1:59

Makoyed opens the scoring with a step out 44 seconds into the match. She goes to a front headlock snap and nearly catches Orlevych on her back but does get the takedown to go up 3-0. Makoyed adds a pair of high gutwrench turns, then transitions to a bar arm finish for the pin at 1:59 in the first period.


68 kg R16 – Brooklyn Hays (United States) dec. Beibit Seidualy (Kazakhstan), 6-4

A headlock from Seidualy is called a slip throw on the edge, could have been called a takedown for Hays. Seidualy comes right back with a headlock and converts in the center this time, holds Hays on her back for nearly a minute, but Hays escapes with minimal damage at 2-0. Hays gets a push out while coming out of the headlock exchange, 2-1. Double underhook pressure for Hays leads to a takedown going out of bounds. The first period ends 3-2 for Hays. Seidualy is confirmed for passivity early in the second period. However, the action is allowed to continue and Seidualy is awarded a step out on the edge to take a 3-3 criteria lead. Seidualy is now put on the shot clock with 2:10 remaining. The shot clock expires, point Hays. Hays drives back to her double unders, forcing a Seidualy throw attempt going out of bounds. Hays covers for a takedown and is also awarded a caution point for hands to the face. The Kazakhstan corner challenges the call, wanting a step out instead of exposure points and get is. The score stands 6-3 in favor of Hays. Seidualy challenges again for a potential singlet grab late, and it’s confirmed to close the gap to 6-4. Hays rides out the match to a 6-4 win.  


59 kg R16 – Alesia Hetmanava (Individual Neutral Athlete) tech. fall Skye Realin (United States), 10-0

Double leg takedown going out of bouts for Hetmanava to take the early 2-0 lead. Hetmanava adds a four-pointer off a Realin attack to go up 6-0 close to the two-minute mark. It’s 6-0 at the break. A double leg off the whistle scores for Hetmanava to go up 8-0. Hetmanava finishes the match 10-0 with a snapdown, go-behind 50 seconds into the second period.


50 kg R16 – Sage Mortimer (United States) tech. fall Khrystyna Basych (Slovakia), 11-0

Mortimer opens up the scoring with a four-point underhook toss quickly after the opening whistle to take the early 4-0 lead. She tacks on a step out point at the 4:48 mark in the first period. A single leg attempt from Basych is countered by Mortimer for another takedown. Mortimer locks up a leg lace and ends it 11-0 with two turns.


55 kg R32 – Amani Jones (United States) fall Antonia Valdes Arriagada (Chile), 5:00

Valdes Arriagada put on the shot clock midway through a scoreless first period. She is able to get an exposure off a shot attempt to nullify the shot clock. Jones reverses the shot for a point. Valdes Arriagada leads, 2-1, with a fresh start coming at the 3:54 mark in the first period. Off the whistle, Jones picks the right ankle and comes around for a takedown to grab the lead, 3-2. Add a go-behind takedown for Jones to take a 5-2 lead into the break. Crotch lift to the back for Jones and she gets the pin with 1:00 left on the clock in the second period.


68 kg R32 – Brooklyn Hays (United States) dec. Aleah Nickel (Canada), 10-2

Hays gets a go-behind takedown just under a minute into the match, 2-0. She goes for a gutwrench and gets stepped over for two, 2-2. Hays comes back with a single leg takedown to regain the lead with about a minute left in the first period. Hays pressures forward on the edge, goes knee pick left, underhook right for a takedown to end the first up 6-2. A go-behind takedown to open the second frame for Hays, who is now up 8-2. Great shot defense followed by another go-behind takedown puts Hays up 10-2. The match finishes 10-2.  


76 kg R16 – Yelena Makoyed (United States) tech. fall Alina Yertostik (Kazakhstan), 11-0

Makoyed opens the scoring with a single leg takedown, 2-0. Makoyed quickly adds a step out point to go up by three. Front head pull to a left side underhook takedown for Makoyed, drives Yertostik out of bounds and nearly gets more exposure points. It’s now 5-0 in favor of Makoyed. An unfinished high-c attempt for Makoyed is called four points, but the Kazakhstan corner challenges the call. The challenge is won so the score reverts back to 5-0. Makoyed is back in on high-c, transitions to double leg for the takedown. She adds a set of exposure points going out-of-bounds to go up 9-0. Makoyed ices the match with a snapdown, go-behind finish to make it an 11-0 technical fall at the 3:26 mark of the first period.


87 kg Repechage – Payton Jacobson (United States) dec. Ilya Mialeshchyk (Individual Neutral Athlete), 7-0

Mialeshchyk gets put down at the 4:41 mark of the first period. Jacobson gets the first chance on top, now leading 1-0. Jacobson is close to converting a gutwrench. He slips off during the turn and gets reversed, which ties up the score, 1-1. The U.S. corner challenges the call and wins. The point for Mialeshchyk is taken off the board, called an offensive leg foul on the reversal. Jacobson bulls his way into the body with a left side underhook, Mialeshchyk goes for a toss on the edge and gets stuck on back. Jacobson takes command, 5-0. Back to the body lock for Jacobson and he nets a step out, 6-0. Jacobson growing in confidence as we head to the break. Mialeshchyk hit for his second passivity of the match and Jacobson goes on top a second time, now up, 7-0. Jacobson plays it conservative the rest of the match and cruises to a 7-0 win.  


55 kg Repechage – Billy Sullivan (United States) winner by forfeit Cristopher Verastegui Aguilar (Colombia)

Sullivan received a forfeit in his repechage match.


130 kg Repechage – Giorgi Tsopurashvili (Georgia) dec. KJ Miley (United States), 5-0

Arm throw for Tsopurashvili right off the whistle to take a 4-0 lead in the first 10 seconds of the match. Miley is put underneath on a passivity call at the 4:34 mark of the first period. Miley doesn’t surrender a turn, so he trails 5-0, which holds to the break. It’s slow going throughout a scoreless second period. The match ends 5-0 in favor of Tsopurashvili.
