Match Notes: Senior World Championships Day Two

The 2024 Senior World Championships continue on Tuesday from Feti Borova Sports Hall in Tirana, Albania. Today will feature Greco-Roman repechage rounds and medal matches, plus the start of women's freestyle through its semifinals. Updates and results from each Team USA match can be found below.

Session Two Match Notes

72 kg SF – Ami Ishii (Japan) tech. fall Kylie Welker (United States), 12-1

Ishii is put on the shot clock at the 4:23 mark in the first period. Ishii gets in on a low-level single leg, Welker is doing the splits to counter, Ishii able to fight through and finish after it appeared Welker would come out on top. Ishii locks up a leg lace and turns Welker. She transitions to an arm turk and exposes Welker as time runs out in the first. Welker did prevent a score until after the shot clock expired giving Ishii a 6-1 lead at the break. Ishii goes head inside single to the right and Welker fends it off nicely. No points on either side through the first half of period two. Ishii in deep on the low level again, gets to the leg lace but can’t get a turn. It’s 8-1 Ishii with 1:04 to go. Welker takes her first deep shot of the match and gives up a go-behind making it 10-1 with 33 seconds left. Welker tries to throw an overhook in desperation and gives up a takedown and the 12-1 technical fall.


55 kg SF – Jin Zhang (China) fall Areana Villaescusa (United States), 1:28

Zhang opens with a single leg, cutting across the body to exposes Villaescusa for two three times. She transitions into a bottom leg arm turk finish, plants Villaescusa on her back and gets a pin in 1:28.

Session One Match Notes

72 kg QF – Kylie Welker (United States) fall Qian Jiang (China), 5:30

Jiang is put on the shot clock at the 4:26 mark of the first period. The shot clock expires and Welker takes the 1-0 lead. Jiang comes back for a pseudo-fireman’s takedown to briefly put Welker on her back, which is only called two points, and China leads 2-1 at the break. No points halfway through the second period, but Welker has been the more aggressive of the two. Welker drives through a double leg going off the mat and plants Jiang into the signage to take a 5-2 lead. China is challenging the call and wins it. The call is reversed to a step out plus a caution and one for fleeing. Welker still maintains the lead, 3-2, with 58 seconds to go. Welker slams the door shut with a single leg, driving Jiang to her back, and ends up getting the fall with 30 seconds to go in the match.


55 kg QF – Areana Villaescusa (United States) dec. Elvira Suleyman Kamaloglu (Turkey), 11-4

Suleyman Kamaloglu attacks a left-side single leg off Villaescusa’s snap and no points result. Villaescusa on the board first with a takedown at the one-minute mark. A nice overhook toss to the back for Villaescusa puts her up 6-0. She adds a second set of exposure from the same ties and takes an 8-0 lead, which holds until the break. An arm spin attempt for Suleyman Kamaloglu results in a two-point exposure. Villaescusa winds up on top with a one-point reversal. Another arm spin attempt for Suleyman Kamaloglu is called two and two as Villaescusa puts the boots in to finish on top and take the match, 11-4.


65 kg QF – Kateryna Zelenykh (Romania) dec. Macey Kilty (United States), 11-4

Kilty grabs a two-on-one, Zelenykh drives through it to a single leg out of bounds and gets a step out point. Kilty gets to the front headlock position a couple times in a row but can’t find a score. Kilty cuts the corner on head outside single leg defense, rolls a crotchlift through for two and ends up on top to end the period leading 2-1. Kilty doing a good job holding center mat in the first minute of the second period. Zelenykh strikes with a double leg to the back off Kilty’s snap pressure to take a 5-2 lead. Kilty gets her arm caught trying a go behind from the feet, and lands on her back, giving up a second four pointer. Kilty returns back with a crotch lift to make it 9-4. With 22 seconds left in the match, Kilty pressures forward to the edge and gets thrown out of bounds from a headlock. The U.S. corner is challenging the call. The challenge is lost making the score 11-4. Kilty shoots off the whistle and gets caught in a front headlock to end the match.


72 kg R16 – Kylie Welker (United States) dec. Pauline Lecarpentier (France), 4-0

Lecarpentier is put on the shot clock at the 4:29 mark of the first period. The shot clock expires, and Welker takes the 1-0 lead, which holds until the break. Lecarpentier is put on the shot clock a second time, 40 seconds into the second period. The shot clock expires and Welker takes a 2-0 lead. Welker gets to a front headlock position but can’t find the angle for a go-behind. Welker gets a go-behind with 10 seconds left in the match to go up 4-0 and take the win.


55 kg R16 – Areana Villaescusa (United States) fall Zulfiya Yakhyarova (Kazakhstan), 1:45

Villaescusa plants a two-on-one to the mat for the opening takedown of the match. She goes back to the two-on-one, transitions into a high-level sing leg for her second takedown. Villaescusa holds an arm turk and pressures a claw to secure the pin in 1:45.


65 kg R16 – Macey Kilty (United States) forfeit Alexis Gomez (Mexico)

Kilty received a forfeit to advance to the quarterfinals.


72 kg R32 – Kylie Welker (United States) tech. fall Aleah Nickel (Canada), 10-0

Go-behind takedown right into a trapped-arm gutwrench for Welker, who scores two exposures, to take an early 6-0 lead. Welker snags an ankle pick to go up 8-0 just over one minute into the period. The 8-0 score holds until the break. A shot attempt from Nickel gets overextended. Welker breaks the lock and spins around behind to finish the match, 10-0.


59 kg R32 – Mansi Mansi (India) dec. Jacarra Winchester (United States), 2-1

Mansi is put on the shot clock at the 4:27 mark of the first period in a scoreless match. The shot clock expires, and Winchester takes the early 1-0 lead. Mansi attempts a double leg, Winchester overhooks out of it and it’s 1-0 at the break. Winchester now on the shot clock at the 2:24 mark in the second period. The shot clock expires on Winchester, and she is losing on criteria, 1-1. Winchester is put on the shot clock for a second time with 1:20 left in the match. The shot clock expires, and Mansi leads 2-1. Mansi takes the match, 2-1. Neither wrestler scores an offensive point, nor gets close to converting a leg attack.


63 kg Repechage – Abu Amaev (Bulgaria) dec. Ildar Hafizov (United States), 7-1

Hafizov goes for an arm spin, gets driven up and out of bounds to go down 1-0 in the first 25 seconds of the match. Hafizov is dinged for passivity at the 4:31 mark and goes underneath, down 2-0. Amaev is unable to find a turn from top. Hafizov is driven out of bounds by a front headlock. No points called on the exchange and Bulgaria will challenge the call. The challenge is lost and Hafizov gets a point to make it 2-1. A body lock attempt form Amaev, Hafizov counters to the back, going out of bounds. It’s called one point step out for Amaev and the U.S. will challenge. The challenge is lost. It’s 4-1 in favor of Amaev at the break. Hafizov gets a tight front headlock from standing, Amaev pressures in and breaks the grip with two minutes left. Hafizov is put down from passivity a second time. A low gutwrench lift for Amaev lands this time for two points. Hafizov trails 7-1 with a minute to go. Hafizov appears to have banged up his right ankle and unable to really get anything going in the final minute. Hafizov’s tournament comes to an end.
