The 2024 U23 World Championships continue on Thursday from Feti Borova Sports Hall in Tirana, Albania. The morning session features women's group one (50-55-59-68-76 kg) repechage and the qualification rounds for women's freestyle group two (53-57-62-65-72 kg). The evening session will wrestle the women's freestyle group two semifinals followed by the women's freestyle group one medal matches. Updates and results from each Team USA match can be found below.

Session Two Match Notes

76 kg Gold Medal Match – Yelena Makoyed (United States) fall Shuiyan Cheng (China), 2:30

Makoyed makes it look too easy with a pass by to a single leg in the opening seconds. She converts a gutwrench tilt to make the score 4-0 33 seconds into the match. Rinse and repeat the pass by single leg and Makoyed is up 6-0. She goes arm turk and tilts Cheng over to gains two exposure points. Makoyed transitions to an arm bundle and gets the pin in 2:30 to become a U23 World champion.


68 kg Bronze Medal Match – Alina Shauchuk (Individual Neutral Athlete) dec. Brooklyn Hays (United States), 6-4

Shauchuk is put on the shot clock at the 4:31 mark of the first period in a scoreless match. The shot clock expires, and Hays takes the early lead, 1-0. Shauchuk was in on a double leg, but Hays held it off nicely. Its Hays’ turn to go on the clock as we open the second period. She forces the action by driving to double underhooks, but she overextends and gets inside tripped to her back. Hays comes out on top at the end of the exchange, but the shot clock expired before she scored. Shauchuk holds a 5-2 lead midway through the second period. Hays pressing the action once more and gets forced out of bounds for a step out. Hays throws a hook by for a takedown but is unable to get anything going on top before time expires. Shauchuk wins the bronze medal, 6-4.


55 kg Bronze Medal Match – Amani Jones (United States) dec. Bhavika Patel (India), 5-2

Jones with a slick inside trip takedown off a Patel shot attempt to take the early 2-0 lead. A double leg from space for Patel lands to tie things up at 2-2. That’s it for the first period. A good flurry to start the second period leads to a Jones step out point and she takes over the lead, 3-2. A lateral drop attempt for Patel is countered by Jones to seal the match. Jones wins the bronze medal with a 5-2 decision.


Mortimer comes out pressing and Pudova is hit for fleeing in the first 10 seconds of the match. Mortimer comes right back with a takedown going out of bounds for two. It’s 3-0 Mortimer 20 seconds into the match. A questionable headlock attempt for Pudova is called a slip throw. Mortimer goes for a throw from the tie up and lands on her back before she rolls through. Mortimer recovers in a spladle position and pulls Pudova over for a turn. The officials meet and call Pudova for a defensive caution, two hands on the head, and award a point to Mortimer. Mortimer takes a 6-0 lead to the break and is looking great so far. A snapdown go-behind takedown for Pudova to start the second period. She lands in a trapped arm position, but Mortimer holds it off to keep the score at 6-2. A headlock going out of bounds for Mortimer lands, should have been called a four, but it’s only given one. There is not challenge so the score reads 7-2 for Mortimer. Mortimer steps out and it’s 7-3 with 1:39 to go. Pudova gets a “gimme” takedown with five seconds left to cut the lead to 7-5 and time expires. Sage Mortimer is a 23 World champion!

72 kg SF – Kylie Welker (United States) dec. Anastasiya Alpyeyeva (Ukraine), 3-1

Alpyeyeva is put on the shot clock in a scoreless contest at the 4:29 mark in the first period. Welker has been the clear aggressor to this point in the match. Welker is on the board first as the shot clock expires. It’s 1-0 for Welker at the break. Welker gets put on the clock with 1:46 left in the match, still leading, 1-0. The shot clock expires and it’s 1-1 with Alpyeyeva holding criteria. A crisp low single lands for Welker. She regains the lead, 3-1, with 55 seconds to go. Welker emerges with the win, 3-1, after a nice flurry to end the match.

62 kg SF – Macey Kilty (United States) tech. fall Viktoria Vesso (Estonia), 12-2

Kilty is put on the shot clock 1:20 into the first period. She attacks immediately, going right to a single leg and converts to nullify the clock while taking a 2-0- lead. A high-single leg transitions to a double leg finish going out of bounds for Kilty, and she goes up 4-0. Kilty spins around a Vesso shot attempt and goes directly into a gutwrench to take an 8-0 lead. She fends off a crotch lift in the final moments of the period. Vesso is on the board with a go-behind takedown to start the second period. Kilty comes right back with a quick single leg finish, 10-2. The match is clinched with a go-behind takedown for Kilty to win it, 12-2.

57 kg SF – Zhala Aliyeva (Azerbaijan) fall Sofia Macaluso (United States), 2:04

Overhook toss to the back for Aliyeva in the first 20 seconds of the match to take an early 4-0 lead. Macaluso attempts a right-side single leg and gets countered for two. Aliyeva snaps and goes behind to make it 8-0. She gathers an arm bar, pushing Macaluso to her back and gets a pin with six seconds left in the period.  

Session One Match Notes

62 kg QF – Macey Kilty (United States) tech. fall Astrid Montero Chirinos (Venezuela), 10-0

Single leg for Kilty off the whistle and she works for the takedown. Kilty gets back to the split leg position that she has been in during her other matches and gets a set of exposure points. She transitions into a leg lace and gets the technical fall with three turns. Kilty wins 10-0 in 1:03.

72 kg QF – Kylie Welker (United States) tech. fall Haticenur Sari (Turkey), 10-0

Welker scores a go-behind takedown early and goes right into a gutwrench for two turns. She switches to a leg lace and ends it 10-0 in 40 seconds.

62 kg R16 – Macey Kilty (United States) fall Esther Kolawole (Nigeria), 5:30

Kolawole is put on the shot clock early in the first period, it expires, and Kilty takes a 1-0 lead at the 4:10 mark of the first period. Kilty fights off a deep Kolawole double. The first period ends 1-0. Kilty with a lot of forward pressure but not is getting deep on her attacks. Kilty shoots, re-attack from Kolawole going out of bounds is scored a step out, 1-1. A second single leg attempt converts for Kolawole and Kilty trails 3-1 midway through the second period. Kilty pops the arm up into her high-c, crackdown finish. Kilty forces Kolawole to her back, splits the legs, and gets the fall at 5:30.

57 kg QF – Sofia Macaluso (United States) dec. Anastasia Kozlova (Individual Neutral Athlete), 4-1

Macaluso is put on the shot clock midway through the first period, it expires, and Kozlova take the 1-0 lead. No more scoring in the first keeps it 1-0 at the break. Macaluso gets on the board with a takedown-to-turn combination just under one minute into the second period. Macaluso navigates the rest of the period to keep the 4-1 decision win.

53 kg QF – Otgontuya Chinbold (Mongolia) dec. Elena Ivaldi (United States), 10-8

Evaldi pressuring in with underhooks and gets tossed in an arm spin to her back in the first minute. She is able to fight out of it and is down 4-0 with 4:34 to go. Ivaldi converts on a single leg to make the score 4-2. Headlock lands from Chinbold and Ivaldi rolls through for some exposure points. The exchanges is called 2-2, so it’s now 6-4 Chinbold, which holds to the break. Halfway through the second period Chinbold strikes again with her headlock, this time for four points. Underhook-to-ankle pick for Ivaldi cuts the lead to 10-6. Ivaldi gets a takedown at the buzzer but it’s not enough. She falls, 10-8.

72 kg R16 – Kylie Welker (United States) tech. fall Anastassiya Panassovich (Kazakhstan), 11-0

A nice high level snatch single for Welker lands. She adds a gutwrench going off the mat, but it is called out of bounds. A shot clock point goes on the board for Welker to give her a 3-0 lead going into the break. A powerful double leg to the back for Welker makes it 7-0. Welker finishes the match with a nice snap setup to her knee pick, taking Panassovich to her back for four. Welker wins by technical fall, 11-0.

62 kg R32 – Macey Kilty (United States) fall Tynys Dubek (Kazakhstan), 2:33

Kilty shoots off the whistle, gets fully extended underneath, leads to no points. Kilty shoots Dubek off the mat to get on the board first, 1-0. A high-c takedown for Kilty lands after some work. She splits the legs on a crackdown finish and is looking for the fall. Kilty moves to an inside leg turk and secures the fall in 2:33.

57 kg R16 – Sofia Macaluso (United States) dec. Bertha Rojas Chavez (Mexico), 11-9

Macaluso is put on the shot clock at 4:27 in the first period, gives up a go-behind score and the clock expires, so she trails 3-0 early. Inside trip for Macaluso lands for four. She transitions to an arm bar and nearly gets it. The first period ends 4-3 for Macaluso. A single leg converts for Rojas Chavez early in the second to regain the lead, 5-4. Macaluso tries to force an overhook and ends up getting taken down with two minutes to go, now trailing, 7-4. An errant shot attempt from Macaluso is countered for another Rojas Chavez score, 9-4. A desperation inside trip scores to the back for Macaluso, and she nearly gets the fall. Rojas Chavez bellies out, Macaluso tips her over again with under one second on the clock to get the match deciding exposure. The Mexico corner challenges the call and loses. Macaluso completes the comeback, 11-9.

65 kg R32 – Kateryna Zelenykh (Romania) dec. Adaugo Nwachukwu (United States), 5-5

Nwachukwu gets on the board 11 seconds into the match with a step out point, 1-0. Zelenykh goes arm drag to a double leg finish, taking Nwachukwu to the back for four. The U.S. corner is challenging with 35 seconds left in the first. The challenge is lost, so it’s 5-1 Zelenykh, and we head to the period break. Zelenykh is put on the shot clock with 2:12 left in the match. The shot clock expires to give Nwachukwu a point. Nwachukwu drives an underhook through to a step out to cut the lead to 5-3. Nwachukwu adds a takedown as time expires to tie it up, 5-5, but she falls on criteria.

53 kg R16 – Elena Ivaldi (United States) dec. Yusmy Chaparro Urrego (Colombia), 8-8

Ivaldi works hard to finish a single leg on the edge just over a minute into the match to take a 2-0 lead. Chaparro Urrego finishes a single leg to tie things up. Ivaldi put herself in danger position trying a counter the single leg and had to belly out. Ivaldi comes back with a clean single leg finish to regain the lead, 4-2. Double leg off the whistle for Chaparro Urrego to take the lead back, 4-4, going into the break. Ivaldi trapped underneath off her own shot attempt, Chaparro Urrego hits a head-in-the-hole counter for two. Ivaldi drops to a low single from an underhook tie to get her first points of the second period, then gets countered to her back on a leg lace attempt. Chaparro Urrego leads 8-6 with 1:15 to go in the match. Ivaldi is back in front, 8-8, with another underhook throw by takedown. Ivaldi hangs on to a single leg as she finishes out the match and get the criteria win.

68 kg Repechage – Brooklyn Hays (United States) dec. Luciana Beda (Moldova), 7-0

Beda is put on the shot clock at the 4:23 mark in the first period of a scoreless match. Hays is close to converting a single leg from her underhook ties but can’t finish. Beda takes injury time with four seconds left on the shot clock and appears to have hit her head. The shot clock expires, and Hays takes over the lead, 1-0. It’s 1a one-point lead for Hays at the break. She was the aggressor throughout the first period. Hays comes out in the second period with her double unders, snapping them down to a go-behind finish for the takedown. She adds a second go-behind takedown, this time off a Beda shot attempt, 5-0. Hays ices the match with a double leg finish in the final moments to take decision, 7-0.
