The 2024 Senior World Championships begin on Monday from Feti Borova Sports Hall in Tirana, Albania. Today will feature Greco-Roman qualification rounds through the semifinals. Updates and results from each Team USA match can be found below.

Session One Match Notes

72 kg R16 – Dominik Etlinger (Croatia) tech. fall Benjamin Peak (United States), 9-0

Peak was the aggressor most of the first minute but will be put down in passivity at the 4:48 mark. He gives up four gutwrenches in succession and will fall 9-0 in 1:41.


*Etlinger lost to 9-0 to Ulvi Ganizade (Azerbaijan) in the quarterfinals, eliminating Peak from medal contention.


55 kg R16 – Sanjeev Sanjeev (India) dec. Brady Koontz (United States), 5-3

Sanjeev hit for passivity at the 4:37 mark and Koontz gets his chance on top. Koontz locks up a tight, elbow-to-elbow gutwrench and converts it for a turn. It’s 3-0 Koontz with about one minute left in the first period. The period ends 3-0 for Koontz. Sanjeev gets a chance on top with 2:13 to go. He locks up a low gutwrench and takes the lead, 5-3, with two successful turns. Koontz reverses the second turn into a front headlock position but can’t do anything with it. The match pummels to the finish and Koontz will fall, 5-3.


*Sanjeev lost to 9-0 to Denis Mihai (Romania) in the quarterfinals, eliminating Koontz from medal contention.


63 kg R32 – Nihat Mammadli (Azerbaijan) tech. fall Ildar Hafizov (United States), 10-0

Hafizov gets hit for passivity at the 4:49 mark and will go underneath. Mammadli locks up a low gutwrench, converts for two exposure. He transitions to a lift, which lands for four points. Mammadli secures a final gutwrench to end the match 9-0 in 1:44. Hafizov is challenging the sequence of events from par terre. The challenge is lost and Hafizov falls by a 10-0 final.


*Mammadli advanced to the finals, which pulled Hafizov into the repechage rounds.


82 kg R32 – Per Albin Olofsson (Sweden) dec. Aliaksandr Kikiniou (United States), 5-1

An arm throw attempt for Kikiniou is called a slip midway through the first. At the 4:25 mark, Kikiniou gets to go on top via passivity, has a low gut locked up but can’t get the turn. Kikiniou leads 1-0 with one minute to go in the first. Kikiniou hit for passivity 39 seconds into the second period. No score for Olofsson keeps the match 1-1. Kikiniou hit for passivity again with 1:06 to go and is put down. He’s charged with a defensive leg foul on a gutwrench attempt, caution and two. The U.S. corner is challenging. The call is reversed bringing it back to 1-1 with 39 seconds left. Kikiniou goes for a desperation throw and gets countered to his back for four points as time runs out in the match. Olofsson takes this one 5-1.


*Olofsson lost to 9-9 to Karlo Kodric (Croatia) in the round-of-16, eliminating Kikiniou from medal contention.


72 kg R32 – Benjamin Peak (United States) tech. fall Mohammadreza Geraei (Iran), 11-3

An arm drag going out of bounds for Geraei to take a 2-0 lead in the first 30 seconds. Peak drives an underhook through for a takedown of his own. He gets a low-gutwrench lift and throws it out of bounds with no exposure, correct throw points called, to give Peak a 4-2 lead. Geraei is challenging the call for a slip throw on the takedown. The challenge comes back with a takedown confirmed for Peak, but also adds a leg foul on Geraei during the lift. Peak gets to go back on top leading 6-2. No points from Peak and we are back to the feet. Two-on-one for Geraei pushes Peak out-of-bounds to make it 6-3. Geraei goes body lock, double knee “inside trip” to the back to make it 7-6 with 32 seconds left in the first period. In a big swing, the call is reversed to an offensive leg foul, and Peak still leads, 6-3. Out of the break, Geraei goes for a high dive, Peak counters for a takedown. He tries to lift out of bounds but can’t land it. Peak leads 8-3 with 1:07 to go. Another point is on the board for Peak after the lift attempt, perhaps called a step out, not positive. Peak drives through a desperation attempt from Geraei and he wins the match, 11-3.
