Match Notes: U23 World Championships Day Two

The 2024 U23 World Championships continue on Tuesday from Feti Borova Sports Hall in Tirana, Albania. The morning session features Greco-Roman group one (60-67-72-82-97 kg) repechage and the qualification rounds for Greco-Roman group two (55-63-77-87-130 kg). Session two will wrestle the group two semifinals followed by the group one medal matches. Updates from each Team USA match can be found below.

82 kg Gold Medal Match – Mohammad Naghousi (Iran) dec. Beka Melelashvili (United States), 4-3

After an uneventful first minute, Melelashvili is put underneath on a passivity call at the 4:43 mark of the first period. Naghousi works to secure his lock, carries Melelashvili to the edge and tosses going out-of-bounds. Melelashvili did not expose on the throw and only gives up two points. The period ends with a 3-0 lead for Naghousi. To open the second period, Melelashvili pressures forward and forces an arm spin attempt from Naghousi, which is called a slip throw. Melelashvili gets his chance on top with 2:13 left in the match, down, 3-1. While working to set up his lock, Melelashvili pulls the right arm over the top of Naghousi’s head and slips off the front, giving up a one-point reversal. Melelashvili fends off another Naghousi attack from top and ends up securing a counter takedown for two points, which cuts the score to 4-3. Melelashvili could not find his offense in the final minute and finishes with the silver medal.

130 kg QF – Dmitrii Baboryko (Individual Neutral Athlete) tech. fall KJ Miley (United States), 8-0

Baboryko hits an underhook toss the early takedown. He transitions directly into a three-gutwrench sequence to end the match by technical fall, 8-0, in 44 seconds.


87 kg QF – Aues Gonibov (Individual Neutral Athlete) dec. Payton Jacobson (United States), 3-1

Jacobson gets hit for passivity and goes underneath at the 4:39 mark. Gonibov executes a high gut lift going out-of-bounds, Jacobson doesn’t expose, called correct throw for two points. It’s 3-0 Gonibov with a minute left in the first period. The score holds to the break. Jacobson gets his chance on top at the 2:12 mark of the second period. Gonibov keeps his hips sucked to the mat, Jacobson can’t get a secure lock, and we return to standing, 3-1 Gonibov leads. The match pummels to the finish from neutral with no more points.  


130 kg R16 – KJ Miley (United States) dec. Tomasz Wawrzynczyk (Poland), 5-3

Arm throw for Miley in the first thirty seconds of the match to take a 4-0 lead. Wawrzynczyk hit for passivity at the 4:37 mark and goes underneath. Miley is unable to get a turn from top and takes a 5-0 lead to the break. After 49 seconds of pummeling in the second period, Miley is put down for passivity. Wawrzynczyk is able to convert a gutwrench and cuts into the lead, 5-3. The match finishes with back-and-forth pummeling from neutral. Miley takes this one, 5-3.


87 kg R16 – Payton Jacobson (United States) tech. fall Yudai Kobori (Japan), 8-0

Big boy lock to the back for Jacobson to take the 4-0 lead 24-seconds into the match. He went right back to the well and ended things with a second body lock toss, 8-0, in 59 seconds.


77 kg R16 – Doniyorkhon Nakibov (Uzbekistan) dec. Hunter Garvin (United States), 7-1

Garvin gets a step out from overhook toss to open the scoring early. Nakibov counters with a step out point of his own. Body lock toss going out of bounds for Nakibov gives him a 5-1 lead halfway through the first period. Garvin dinged for passivity at the 3:59 mark in the first period and goes underneath, trailing, 6-1. Nakibov gets close to the lift from top, but Garvin counters without exposing. The period ends with Nakibov holding the 6-1 advantage. A hard handfight throughout the second period, but little points. Garvin pressures forward and slips out of bounds with one second left, giving up a step out point, to lose, 7-1.


55 kg R16 – Rashad Mammadov (Azerbaijan) tech. fall Billy Sullivan (United States), 12-4

Mammadov snags an arm drag takedown a little over one minute into the match to take the early lead. Mammadov goes for a front headlock roll, Sullivan counters with exposure to gain top position and tie the score, 2-2. Sullivan gets reversed on a turn attempt to make things 3-2. Mammadov scores on a turn but gets countered by Sullivan with exposure points a second time, 5-4. Mammadov ends the first period scoring with a takedown-to-turn combination to make it 9-4. Sullivan is hit for passivity early in the second period, now trailing, 10-4. Sullivan defended well from the bottom position to get one more shot from neutral. Mammadov applies forward pressure driving Sullivan to the edge of the mat, Sullivan counters out of desperation and gives up the takedown. Mammadov takes the match by technical fall, 12-4.


63 kg R32 – Mairbek Salimov (Poland) tech. fall Jonathan Gurule (United States), 9-0

Gurule gets put down on first passivity at the 4:49 mark of the first period. Gurule solidly defends two gutwrench attempts, transitions into an overhook from the standing position, gets tossed for four points, followed by two turns. The match ends by technical fall, 9-0, in just over two minutes.  


*Alimov lost to Komei Sawada (Japan) in the quarterfinals, 3-1, eliminating Gurule from medal contention.


87 kg R32 – Payton Jacobson (United States) dec. Tomislav Brkan (Croatia), 3-1

Jacobson goes down 1-0 on passivity at the 4:54 mark in the first period. He displays some great gutwrench defense and we are back standing. The first period ends 1-0 in favor of Bkran. Jacobson did a nice job of taking ground the back half of the first period, which could pay off later. Jacobson gets his chance on top at the 2:24 mark in the second frame, which ties up 1-1. Jacobson starts working a high chest lock and transitions low, goes for the lift but can’t convert. Jacobson holds an underhook for about a minute which does the job to avoid a second passivity call in the match. Brkan goes for a desperation takedown attempt at the buzzer which is countered by Jacobson for two. Jacobson takes the match, 3-1.


55 kg R32 – Billy Sullivan (United States) tech. fall Dieymer Rosal Amundaray (Venezuela), 18-10

Sullivan put down for passivity at the 4:38 mark in the first period. Things were physical and chippy early. A lift attempt from Rosal Amundaray is countered nicely by Sullivan. He transitions right into a front headlock, pops it through, gives up a counter exposure and rolls through again, this time for four points. Sullivan continues to work on top and adds a gutwrench to take an 8-3 lead to the break. Sullivan goes back to the front headlock at the start the second but gets countered to his back going out-of-bounds and gives up two. The U.S. corner challenges the call and loses making the score 8-6 with 2:26 left. Sullivan returns with an arm throw takedown going out of bounds to go up 10-6. A headlock converts for Sullivan, who is rolled through, and comes back on top to presumably end it 16-8 with 47 seconds left. The Venezuela corner challenges the call and wins making the score 16-10. There was a second set of exposure points awarded to Rosal Amundaray on the headlock sequence. A desperation headlock attempt from Rosal Amundaray is countered by Sullivan to take the match 18-10 as time expires.


77 kg R32 – Hunter Garvin (United States) tech. fall Karan Karan (India), 9-1

Garvin hit with passivity at 4:44 mark in the first period and goes underneath. Garvin holds off the top attacks from Karan to keep the score at 1-0, which holds to the end of the period. Karan has been getting to double underhooks with Garvin countering well. Garvin opens the scoring in the second frame with an impressive over-under body lock toss going out-of-bounds to take a 4-1 lead. Karan is put down for passivity with 1:32 left in the match, pushing Garvin’s lead to 5-1. Garvin attacks a low gut lift and transitions nicely to a trapped arm gutwrench, converts on two turns to seal the technical fall, 9-1, at 1:16 mark of the second period.
