TIRANA, Albania – Defending 61 kg World champion Vito Arujau was upended by 2024 U20 World champion Masanosuke Ono of Japan in the men’s freestyle semifinals on Wednesday evening at the 2024 Senior World Championships.

The hot streak continued for Ono, who took down Arujau by technical fall, 12-0, in front of a rowdy crowd at Tirana’s Feti Borova Sports Hall. Ono immediately converted on a single leg and turned it into six points with a pair of gutwrenches. He added a front headlock roll for two to end the first period, and a front headlock toss for four to clinch the match early in the second period.

Arujau drops into the bronze medal match where he will await the winner of tomorrow morning’s repechage. The likeliest opponent for Arujau is Tokyo Olympic champion Zaur Uguev, who is an Individual Neutral Athlete.

2020 Olympic champion and three-time World champion David Taylor was pulled into the repechage and will have a chance to end things with a bronze medal. Taylor needs two wins to get into the 92 kg bronze medal match. His first opponent in the morning will be 2021 World bronze medalist Abubakr Abakarov of Azerbaijan.

2012 Olympic champion and six-time World champion Jordan Burroughs did not receive the same fortune when it came to a repechage opportunity at 79 kg. Iran’s Mohammad Nokhodilarimi, who defeated Burroughs 6-4 in the quarterfinals, was upended in a dramatic semifinal, keeping Burroughs from getting a chance to wrestle back for bronze.

The Senior World Championships conclude at 4 p.m. local time tomorrow with the men’s freestyle repechage, followed by the medal matches at 6 p.m. For those planning to follow along live, Tirana, Albania, is located five hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
