by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling
TIRANA, Albania – 2020 Olympic champion and three-time World champion David Taylor advanced to the 92 kg bronze medal match on Thursday afternoon at the 2024 Senior World Championships.
Taylor went 2-0 during the repechage rounds at Tirana’s Feti Borova Sports Hall to position himself one win away from a fifth World medal. He defeated 2021 World bronze medalist Abubakr Abakarov of Azerbaijan 3-1 to open the session and followed with an 11-1 technical fall over 2021 U23 World bronze medalist Lars Schaefle of Germany.
It will be a primetime matchup between World champions in the bronze medal bout. Taylor goes up against two-time World champion Kamran Ghasempour of Iran this evening in what is likely to be the final match of his competitive career.
2023 World champion Vito Arujau will also compete for a medal. His 61 kg bronze medal match opponent is Tokyo Olympic champion and two-time World champion Zavur Uguev, an Individual Neutral Athlete.
The Senior World Championships conclude at 6 p.m. local time tonight with the men’s freestyle medal matches. For those planning to follow along live, Tirana, Albania, is located five hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
