Robinson caps U20 Worlds run with finals pin; U.S. women finish third as team

by Richard Immel, USA Wrestling

PONTEVEDRA, Spain – The U.S. women picked up its fourth medal at the 2024 U20 World Championships with Jasmine Robinson pinning her way to gold at 72 kg on Friday evening at Pontevedra Municipal Sports Hall.

The Texas native rounded out a dominant effort in Spain with a second-period pin against U20 Asian runner-up Yuqi Liu of China in the gold medal match. It was Robinson’s fourth pin in as many matches at the event.

The finals kept a frenetic pace until Robinson was able to end it with the stick. Liu took an early 2-0 lead from a double leg takedown 10 seconds into the match. Robinson returned serve with a pair of four-point throws—an overhook toss and a neck wrench—before getting reversed by Liu. With Robinson leading at the break, 9-4, Liu opened the second period with her second takedown of the match to cut the lead the three before Robinson connected again with a neck wrench to secure the fall at the 4:14 mark.

Robinson, who was a U17 World bronze medalist last year, notched pins over Senior Pan American silver medalist Edna Jimenez Villalba of Mexico, individual neutral athlete Kristina Bratchikova, and U17 World bronze medalist Noemi Osvath Nagy of Hungary to qualify for the gold medal bout. She logged exactly seven minutes of mat time at the event with her finals match the only one to go into the second period.

The finals win by Robinson was instrumental for the U.S. finishing in third place as a team. The U.S. and China were neck-and-neck in the standings heading into the 72 kg final, the last match of the day, with the winner clinching third place for her county.

Japan took the top spot with three champions, six medalists and 149 team points. India came in second place, 19 points behind Japan, with one champion and five medalists. The U.S. finished in third place with 101 team points, two points ahead of China.

Robinson joined 55 kg champion Cristelle Rodriguez as gold medalists for Team USA in women’s freestyle. Additionally, the U.S. picked up a silver medal from Alexis Janiak at 59 kg and a bronze medal from Naomi Simon at 76 kg.

Anaya Falcon, Cadence Diduch, Reese Larramendy and Caitlyn Davis added critical team points to the U.S. tally with top ten placements at their respective weight classes.

During the Friday morning session, Carissa Qureshi fell to Neha Neha of India in the 57 kg repechage by technical fall, 15-4. Quereshi was the lone repechage participant for Team USA on the day.

The U20 World Championships continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. local time with the men’s freestyle group one (57-65-70-79-97 kg) repechage and the qualification rounds for men’s freestyle group two (61-74-86-92-125 kg). Pontevedra, Spain, is located six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.

A full set of brackets and match-by-match results is available on UWW Arena. A live broadcast of the event is available for the U.S. market at FloWrestling.com.
