Ferriter is unbeaten on day one of Beach World Series in Greece, three U.S. women have a win in their group

KATERINI-PIERRIA, Greece – Kyle Ferriter of Colorado won both of his matches in Group C at Over 90 kg to complete the first day of the Beach World Series Katerini-Pierria undefeated on Saturday. This is the fourth stop of the five-event UWW Beach World Series for 2024.
The first day of competition included knockout matches, then the first two rounds of Group competition in each weight class.
Ferriter beat a pair of U.S. teammates in his two matches, stopping Gabriel Rangel, 3-1 and Dominic Porter, 3-0. He must face Masayuki Amano of Japan on Sunday morning, with an opportunity to win Group C and advance to Sunday afternoon’s semifinals.
Three U.S. women earned one victory in their Group competition to complete the first day with a 1-1 record in their Group, which gives them an opportunity to still win their Group on Sunday morning. Earning a victory in their Group on Saturday were Mia Macaluso of New York at 60 kg, Maura White of New Jersey at 60 kg and Eliana Bommarito of Michigan at Over 70 kg.
Macaluso had two wins on Saturday, as she had to win a knockout match to qualify for her Group, She stopped Christina Papadopoulous of Greece, 3-0, to secure a spot in Group B. Macaluso beat Lilou Louis Dupinay of France, 2-1 in the group, then lost her next match. She battles Sofia Kushnir of Ukraine on Sunday to complete her Group action.
White went 1-1 in Group C, including a victory over Lydia Kanellopoulou of Greece by injury default. She will face Sofiia Bordinskykh of Ukraine on Sunday in her final Group match.
Bommarito, a 2023 Beach World Series champion, also went 1-1 in Group A of her weight class, with a win over Stefania Zacheila of Greece, 3-0. Her Sunday morning opponent is Daria Konstantynova of Ukraine, who defeated Bommarito in the semifinals of the U20 Beach World Championships on Friday. Should Bommarito emerge from Group A, she would still have a chance to win in the semifinals and wrestle for gold.
Bommarito has won four career Beach World Series gold medals in her career, with 2023 victories in Turkey and Romania, and 2024 wins in France and Romania.
One other U.S. wrestler scored a victory on Saturday, as Rebecca Mathewson of North Carolina won her knockout match over Evangelia Kazala of Greece, 3-1 at 60 kg. Mathewson went 0-2 in Group A later in the day, with one more group match on Sunday morning.
There will be 12 U.S. athletes competing on Sunday morning in the third round of group competition which begins at 10:00 a.m. local time. Katerini-Pierria is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time, who the session begins at 3:00 a.m. ET. Any U.S. athletes who advance to the semifinals will compete in the final session, which begins at 4:00 p.m. local time.
