USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals: Woods (14U) and Haber (12U) named girls Outstanding Wrestlers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The first day of the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals featured girls competition in the 14U and 12U age divisions. Competition was at a high level, as girls from across the nation came to test themselves at the highest level.

The Outstanding Wrestler in the 14U division for girls was Zaylyn Woods of Sisters on the Mat, the champion at 120 pounds. Woods won the Folkstyle Nationals for the second straight year. Woods pinned her first two opponents, then defeated Kara-Lynn Dover of the Roundtree Wrestling Academy in a 17-0 technical fall in the finals. Dover had earned technical falls in her first two matches.

The Outstanding Wrestler in the girls 12U division was 2024 Triple Crown winner Avery Haber of Wyoming Seminary, the champion at 81 pounds. Haber was dominant in her bracket, winning her first two matches by pin, then securing an 18-0 technical fall over Paisley Ritschard of RT Elite Wrestling in the finals.

This event is part of the coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown in all of the age groups. For girls at these age groups, the Triple Crown includes the Brian Keck Preseason Nationals, the USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals and the USA Wrestling Women’s Nationals in freestyle.

14U Girls Notes

2023 Triple Crown winner and returning Folkstyle Nationals champion Abigail Peterson of the Big Game Wrestling Club was dominant in winning the 90-pound weight class, winning all three of her matches by pin in a combined 4:22. Included was a 31-second pin in the finals against BryLee Irsik of the Nebraska Wrestling Academy.

Another repeat Folkstyle Nationals champion was Rain Scott of Springs Elite Wrestling Club, the champion at 125 pounds. Scott scored a 6-3 win in the finals over Katie Davidson of Team Nazar Training Center. Scott scored a pin and a technical fall in her first two matches.

In a four-athlete round-robin at 130 pounds, KiMorah Cathey of Hurricane Wrestling Academy won all three of her matches by fall, including a 3:07 pin over 2024 Folkstyle Nationals champion Ariana Schacht of Askren Wrestling Academy, who was the eventual runner-up.

There were four pins in the finals, including Peterson, plus Daphney Gomez of Arizona Girls Wrestling (95), Kaylee Vera of Queen City Grappling Club (110) and Carleigh Clark of BullTrained Wrestling (115).  

12U Girls Notes

Along with Haber, there was only one final which the winner secured a bonus point win. At 69 pounds, Lila Carson of the Antioch Predators WC secured a major decision over Hais Thao of Combat Athletics WC, 9-0.

Juliana Matteo of Ohio was dominant in her four-athlete round-robin at 64 pounds, scoring two technical falls and a pin on the way to victory.

Mia Williams of Vbfighthouse won her three-athlete round robin at 94 pounds with two fast pins, winning her first bout in eight seconds and her second bout in 14 seconds, for only 22 seconds on the mat in her bracket.
