Morgan Turner celebrates her victory in the 49 kg gold medal match at the 2025 U17 World Championships.

ATHENS, Greece — The first batch of women’s freestyle finals took center stage on Wednesday, and Team USA bagged its first gold medal of the 2025 U17 World Championships.

Morgan Turner, now a three-time U17 world medalist, added a second U17 World title to her resume by capturing gold at 49 kg. She defeated Yu Kataoka of Japan with a commanding, 6-1, victory. Turner capitalized with three takedowns and timely defensive maneuvers to get the win.

Turner shared that her motivation was to upgrade her title from last year’s bronze in Amman, Jordan. “I didn’t want to be known as a world bronze medalist anymore,” she noted after the 49 kg medal ceremony. Turner is the first World champion for Team USA during the 2025 season across all age groups and styles.

Adding to the U.S. medal haul were Ella Poalillo (73 kg) and Madison Healey (43 kg), who each earned a bronze medal. Poalillo and Healy had tournaments to mirror one another. Each recorded three falls and looked sharp throughout, with their only losses coming in the semifinals. Both won by fall, courtesy of bar arms, in the pivotal bronze medal round.

In group two semifinal action, Epenesa Elison (53 kg) and Taina Fernandez (61 kg) remained undefeated and advanced to tomorrow’s gold medal round. Elison posted a dominant 10-0 technical fall against Farida Abdrakhmanova of Kazakhstan, while Fernandez secured a first-period pin on Miranda Kapanadze of Georgia, in the semis.

Maisie Elliott (40 kg) and Jaclyn Bouzakis (46 kg) both fell in semifinal bouts and will drop into the bronze medal round. Elliot came up nine points short against Shokhista Shonazarova of Uzbekistan. Bouzakis was narrowly edged by Japan’s Hanano Oya, 6-4

With five weight classes in the clubhouse, India holds the lead in the official team race with two champions and two silver medalists. The United States sits in second place, followed by China, Japan, and Kazakhstan.

The women’s freestyle tournament concluded on Friday with the group two repechage round at 10:30 a.m. local time, followed by the group two medal matches at 6 p.m. The first group of men’s freestyle athletes will also take the stage tomorrow morning in Athens.
