INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No. 1 ranked Nebraska-Kearney pushed four into the semifinals to take a 26.5 point lead over Lander after the first day of the NCAA Div. II National Championships on Friday.
Nebraska-Kearney finished the second session with 64 points, followed by Lander with 37.5 points. No. 2 ranked St. Cloud State was third with 35.5 points. Glenville State and Kutztown were tied in fourth with 32.5 points.
Loper wrestlers in the semifinals include No. 6 seed Zachary Ourada (125), No. 4 seed Nick James (149), No. 6 seed Jacobi Deal (174) and No. 5 seed Jackson Kinsella (197). Other UNK wrestlers in the consolation rounds are Hector Serratos (133), Joseph Airola (141), Jacari Deal (184) and Crew Howard (285).
Howard was one of four No. 1 seeds to get beaten on the first day, along with Christian Small of Lake Erie (141), Hayden Pummel of Glenville State (174) and Dominic Murphy of St. Cloud State (197).
Howard was defeated in the opening round by unseeded Freddy Retter of Kutztown, 8-2. Retter has powered into the semifinals, where he will face No. 5 seed Isaiah Vance of Pitt-Johnstown.
Small was beaten in the quarterfinals by No. 8 seed Johnny Lopez of San Francisco State by injury default in 6:03, then pinned in the consolation rounds by No. 2 seed Sean Solis of Mary in 2:46. Pummel was pinned in the first round by unseeded Augustus Dalton of Colorado Mesa in 3:54. Murphy was stopped in the quarterfinals by No. 8 Tereus Henry of Fort Hays State, 5-4.
Lander’s semifinalists are No. 2 seed Christian Davis (133). No. 7 seed Isham Peace (141) and No. 1 seed David Hunsberger (165).
Hunsberger is one of four returning champions to reach the semifinals, joined by Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma (157), Ty McGeary of West Liberty (184) and Derek Blubaugh of Indianapolis (197). McGeary is seeking his third national title. Blubaugh is on a quest to be a four-time finalist. He needed to go to sudden victory to win his quarterfinal match against Dakoda Rodgers of Pitt-Johnstown, 6-3.
The returning champion who was beaten was No. 2 seed Joshua Kenney of Grand Valley State, who lost in the quarterfinals to No. 7 seed Matt Ortiz of McKendree.
St. Cloud State’s semifinalists are No. 1 seed Joel Jesuroga (157) and No. 4 seed Nick Novak (165).
