Cannon named OW in impressive Boys High School Grades 11-12 finals at USA Wrestling Brian Keck Preseason Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa - The level of competition was extremely high during the finals of the Boys High School Grades 11-12 division at the USA Wrestling Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals on Saturday afternoon. Numerous talents who are expected to be top college prospects showed off their skills against other top stars from across the nation.
The Outstanding Wrestler was the champion at 120 pounds, Brandon Cannon of Ponderosa High School in Colorado, who scored an 11-6 victory over Jason Shaw of the King Select WC of Illinois in the finals. Cannon showed skills in all positions and was able to get his offense going in the finals. He is making an inspiring recovery from a tumor which kept him off the mats last season. Cannon is a past Beast of the East champion.
The highest nationally ranked wrestler in the tournament was FloWrestling’s No. 10 at heavyweight, Keith Miley of the Thoroughbred Wrestling Academy of Missouri, who scored a pin in the finals. Miley, who competes for Whitfield School, pinned Wyatt Smith of Iowa in the finals in just 25 seconds. Miley was second in last week’s Super 32.
A highlight of the finals came when twin brothers Evan Frost (126) and Jacob Frost (132) of the Sebolt Wrestling Academy of Iowa emerged as Preseason Nationals champion back-to-back. The brothers compete for Dowling Catholic High School and are currently listed as honorable mention in the FloWrestling rankings.
Evan Frost needed a takedown in sudden death overtime to edge Damian Mendez of the Dodge City Wrestling Academy of Kansas, 8-6. The match included quality technique from both wrestlers. Mendez is a two-time state champion of Kansas.
Jacob Frost was dominant on his feet late in a close match to secure a 6-2 decision over National Prep School All-American Dyson Dunham of Boise Youth Wrestling in the finals. Dunham attends Benedictine College Prep.
Securing the title at 160 pounds was 2021 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member Braden Stauffenberg of Izzy Style Wrestling of Illinois, who edged Zane Licht of the Askren Wrestling Academy Lake County in Wisconsin, 1-0. Stauffenberg scored the only point on an escape and rode out Licht to secure the win.
Putting on an offensive display in the 195-pound finals was Stephen Little of Union County High School in Kentucky, who scored a 12-4 major decision over 2021 Cadet World Team member Nathan Wenstrom of Izzy Style Wrestling of Illinois. Little, who is a Little Rock commit and two-time state champion, is currently honorable mention in the FloWrestling rankings.
Winning a battle between two honorable mention wrestlers in FloWrestling’s national rankings was Nate Smith of the Southport Wrestling Club of Indiana, who shut out Dedrick Navarro of the Team Idaho WC in the 106-pound finals, 4-0. Smith, a finalist in Fargo, scored the only takedown of the match over Idaho state champion Navarro.
The finals at 145 pounds was decided with a takedown in sudden victory overtime, as Hagen Heistand of the Sebolt Wrestling Academy in Iowa stopped Taythan Silva of Izzy Style Wrestling of Illinois, 3-1. Silva scored an escape and was leading 1-0 late in the third period when he was hit with a penalty point to tie up the match. Heistand, a 2019 Preseason Nationals runner-up, is a state placewinner for Underwood High School.
Scoring a breakthrough victory at 152 pounds was Michael Bobola, who attends Xaverian Brothers in Massachusetts. Bobola edged nationally respected Bam West of the Oklahoma Regional Training Center, 4-3 at 152 pounds. The key to Bobola’s victory was a third-period takedown.
Two other wrestlers who are ranked as honorable mention in the FloWrestling rankings were able to secure titles, Wyatt Skebba of Aviators Wrestling of Wisconsin (113) and Carson Floyd of North Carolina (220).
Skebba shut out Logan Edwards of the MWC Wrestling Academy, 2-0 in the finals. Skebba is a Wisconsin state runner-up for Hortonville High School.
Floyd also secured a shutout in the finals, stopping Nelson Toro of Team Kombat of Florida, 6-0. Floyd hails from Lake Norman High School.
Other individual champions were Carson DesRosier of the Bruin WC of Montana (138), Owen Heiser of Wisconsin (170) and Peyton Thomas of the Oklahoma Regional Training Center (182).
DesRosier, a two-time Montana state champion from Capital High School, was in control throughout his 7-2 victory over Tanner Gerber of Crass Trained; Weigh In Club of Wisconsin.
Heiser, a Wisconsin state runner-up from Evansville High School, broke open an 8-8 tie to defeat Dalton Loyden of Arizona, 13-8.
Thomas, who competes for Moore High School, secured a 4-1 finals victory over Connor Havill of Ohio.
