Turner, Fowler claim titles as U17 World Team decided at USMC Women’s Nationals

Champions were crowned as the U17 division at the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Championships wrapped on Saturday in Spokane, Washington, following a best-of-three series at each weight class.
Winners at each weight class for the U17 tournament secured a spot on the 2024 U17 World Team. For more information on the team selection procedures, visit themat.com.

It was a round robin style bracket at 40 kg, with Francesca Gusfa and Lily Enos facing off in the finals. Gufsa picked up the win by fall just 29 seconds into the first match of the series. In bout two, it was Gufsa with the 10-0 technical fall in the first period to secure a U17 national title.
Hailey Delgado went head-to-head with Lisa Pastoriza in the championship series at 43 kg. Delgado, a 2023 U15 Pan American Championships gold medalist, used a 4-1 decision in the first match to take a series lead. A 10-0 technical fall in the second match claimed the series for Delgado.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the day, 2023 U17 World Champion Morgan Turner brought down 2023 U17 World bronze medalist Jaclyn Bouzakis two matches to none in the best-of three championship series at 46 kg. Turner had a strong showing in the first match, winning 10-0. Bout two saw a closer result, with Turner grinding out a 5-3 decision after Bouzakis captured an early lead.
In the championship series at 49 kg, 2023 Girls Triple Crown winner and 2023 U15 Pan American Championships gold medalist Epenesa Elison used a pair of 10-0 technical falls to get by Julianna Ocampo for the U17 national title. Elison was in control throughout the tournament, refusing to give up a point as all of her matches were 10-0 technical falls.
At 53 kg, Isabella Marie Gonzales defeated Charlie Wylie in the finals, two matches to one. Gonzales, a three-time age-group Pan American Championships gold medalist, went the distance with Wylie after dropping the first bout, 5-1. Gonzales came back to even the score, besting Wylie 7-2 in the second match. A close 3-0 decision was enough for Gonzales to deicide the tough series in the third match.
Everest Leydecker pulled out the win in the best-of-three series at 57 kg over Emma Bacon. Bacon, a 2021 Pan American Championships gold medalist, earned the 9-7 decision in the first match of the series. It was Leydecker that took control in the second and third matches, securing the win. Leydecker is also registered in the U20 division.
Taina Fernandez used two technical falls to get by Jordyn Fouse in the final series at 61 kg. Fernandez is a two-time U15 Pan American Championships gold medalist, and only surrendered two points to Fouse in the entire series.
In the 65 kg final series, Bella Williams went the distance with Isis France, ultimately winning the series 3-2. Williams claimed the win in the first by a 10-6 decision. In match two, France fired back with a 10-2 decision, evening the series. It was Williams that controlled the third match, scoring seven points in the second period to secure the national title.
At 69 kg, Kaili Manuel faced Sarah Pulk, with Manuel ultimately earning the series win, 2-1. Pulk earned a 13-4 decision in the first match to take the series lead. Manuel had work to do, and she shot back with a 9-2 decision. In the third match, Manuel got Pulk to her back and the fall was called, securing a spot on the U17 World team for Manuel.
In the final series at 73 kg, Piper Fowler, a 2023 U17 World Champion, capped off a dominant tournament with two decisions to sweep Alexandria Alli in the finals. Fowler opened the series with a 5-4 decision. In match two, it was Fowler that widened the gap to win 10-3 for the U17 national title.
