Larramendy, Qureshi secure titles as U20 action concludes at 2024 USMC Women’s Nationals

The 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Championships concluded on Sunday morning as 10 champions were crowned in Spokane, Washington, following a best-of-three series at each weight class.

Winners at each weight class for the U20 tournament secured a spot on the 2024 U20 World Team. For more information on the team selection procedures, visit themat.com.

In the first match of the series at 50 kg, Nyla Valencia built a 6-0 lead early with a takedown and two turns. Anaya Falcon fired back scoring six points, knotting the match at 6-6 into the break. A big move that scored Falcon four helped her improve her lead, and she won match one 14-6. In match two, it was Falcon that came out on top, winning a 10-0 technical fall and the national title.

Clare Booe and Brianna Gonzalez went the distance in the final best-of-three series at 53 kg. Booe came out on top in the first match of the series, earning a close 7-6 decision. In the second and third matches, Gonzalez was in full control, recording two technical falls and outscoring Booe 22-2.

At 55 kg, Cristelle Rodriguez opened up the scoring in the first match of the best-of-three series with a big throw on the edge. She was looking for the early fall, but Zao Estrada escaped her hold. Rodriguez ultimately picked up the fall at 1:25 to take a 1-0 series lead. Rodriguez pushed that momentum forward into the second match, picking up the fall less than a minute into the match to claim the national title.

In a battle between two finalists in the U23 division, it was Carissa Qureshi that earned her first title of the weekend after defeating U23 National champion Everest Leydecker two matches to none in the 57 kg series. Qureshi took the 6-6 decision in the first match, scoring all of her points in the second period. In match two, Qureshi scored six points in the first period and eight in the second to win 14-1.

2023 U20 World bronze medalist Alexis Janiak faced off against 2023 Fargo champion Aubre Krazer in the finals series at 59 kg. Janiak earned the 11-0 technical fall in the opening match of the series. Bout two saw Krazer close the gap, but it was still Janiak that pulled out the 8-4 decision to secure a spot on her second age-group World Team.

In the series at 62 kg, Skyler Hattendorf earned the 10-0 technical fall over Cadence Diduch. It was all Diduch in the second and third bouts, as she came back to claim the U20 national title. A 6-0 decision from Diduch in round two forced a third match, which she was able to close out 2-1 over Hattendorf.

At 65 kg, Reese Larramendy was commanding in her best-of-three series win over Ella Schmit. Larramendy secured the victory in the first match, a 12-1 technical fall. Round two ended in similar fashion, a 10-0 technical fall by Larramendy. She held Schmit to one point in the series, not allowing a takedown.

A pair of decisions pushed Caitlyn Davis ahead of Destiny Rodriguez in the final series at 68 kg. Davis, a 2024 NAIA Women Cascade Collegiate Conference champion for Southern Oregon, shut out Rodriguez in match one, scoring a majority of her points in the first period. In round two, Davis maintained a small lead, and it was enough for the 4-1 decision and the national title.

At 72 kg, U23 National champion Jasmine Robinson of Texas claimed her second title of the weekend, defeating Shannon Workinger in the U20 finals series. Robinson went to work quick, pinning Workinger in just 54 seconds. Round two saw Robinson secure the U20 title with a 13-2 technical fall. Workinger improved on her fifth place finish from last year, taking second place.

In the championship series at 76 kg, Naomi Simon matched up against Kalila Shrive. Simon, a 2023 Fargo champion, earned a 14-3 technical fall to take a series lead over Shrive. Simon closed out the tournament with a win in round two, this time a 12-0 technical fall, with a four-point move on the edge.
