Olympic Wrestling Live Blog: Monday Session I: Elor, Coon open for the USA

That's it for session 1 of the Paris Olympics. We return at 9:00 p.m. Paris time (3:00 p.m. Eastern time) with the semifinals. Amit Elor (USA) will battle for a chance at the finals at 68 kg in women's freestyle.

68 kg WFS quarterfinals - Sol Gum Pak (North Korea) dec. Nisha Dahiya (India) 10-8.
Pak advances to the 68 kg semifinals against Amit Elor (USA). Nisha led 8-1 going into the final minute, but an arm injury made her unable to defend Pak’s attacks. Pak has never competed in any World Championships (Senior or age group) in the past.
68 kg WFS quarterfinals - Amit Elor (USA) dec. Wiktoria Choluj (Poland), 8-0
Elor gets a go-behind for a takedown and a 2-0 lead. She adds a point on a step out, 3-0. Add another takedown for Elor and it is a 5-0 lead.
Choluj placed on shot clock and does not score, giving Elor a 6-0 lead. Elor adds a takedown in the last 20 seconds to extend to an 8-0 lead. Elor wins, 8-0 and advances to the semifinals tonight.
4:28 p.m. Paris time – Mijian Lopez (Cuba) dec. Amin Mirzazadeh (Iran), 3-1 in quarterfinals, eliminating Adam Coon (USA) from the tournament. Coon is no longer eligible for repechage.
4:18 p.m. Paris time - On Deck on Mat B - 68 kg WFS quarterfinals - Amit Elor (USA) vs. Wiktoria Choluj (Poland)

3:55 p.m. Paris time – The crowd went crazy when Koumba Larroque of France came out to the center mat for her 68 kg preliminary against Tayla Ford of New Zealand. The place erupted every time Larroque scored, on her way to a 6-0 victory. Larroque is a medal contender, a four-time Senior World medalist.
3:30 p.m. Paris time - At 68 kg in women’s freestyle, Wiktoria Choluj of Poland defeated No. 8 seed Feng Zhou of China, 10-3. Choluj will battle Amit Elor in the quarterfinals. Choluj is a three-time age-group World medalist, with a medal at the U17, U20 and U23 levels.
3:21 p.m. Paris time – On Mat C, four-time Olympic champion Mijian Lopez of Cuba defeated Seungchan Lee of Korea, 7-0 at 130 kg GR. Lopez will battle Mirzazadeh (IRI) in the quarterfinals. Mirzazadeh must beat Lopez for Coon to remain possible for repechage.
Amit Elor (USA) dec. Buse Cavusoglu Tosun (Turkey), 10-2
Amir Elor scored on two stepouts early in the first period to lead 2-0. Elor added a takedown with 4:22 midway through the period to lead 4-0. Add another step out and its 5-0 at the break.
Tosun was put on the shot clock in the second period and did not score, making it 6-0 with 1:15 left. Add an Elor takedown with 50 seconds left to stretch it to 8-0. Buse got a takedown with 15 seconds left to close to 8-2. Another Elor takedown made it end at 10-2. Elor moves on to the quarterfinals.
Amin Mirzazadeh (Iran) dec. Adam Coon, (USA), 3-1
Coon was hit for passivity first to trail 1-0, and was put down. Mirzazadeh hit a gut wrench for a 3-0 lead. Mirzazadeh leads 3-0 at the break.
Mirzazadeh was hit for passivity in the second period, making it 3-1. Coon was on top but unable to score. There was no more scoring. Mirzazadeh moves onto the quarterfinals. He must make the finals for Coon to qualify for repechage.
2:58 p.m. – USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender opened the wrestling competition with a traditional banging of a stick to the ground. You had to be here. It was cool that Rich got to do that.
2:50 p.m. – With Jason Bryant on the microphone, along with a French speaking announcer, they are running a rules video in the arena, as fans are filling the stands. In 10 minutes, the Olympic Games for wrestling will begin, and it will feature U.S. wrestlers on Mat B and Mat C.
Please note, Greco-Roman 60 kg is on Mat A, Women’s freestyle 68 kg is on Mat B and Greco-Roman 130 kg is on Mat C
2:30 p.m. Paris time – I hope you have set your alarm correctly. Wrestling begins here at the Champ de Mars Arena near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, with the preliminaries in three weight classes at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time.
Don’t run off to the refrigerator when it starts on Peacock live. Both USA wrestlers competing today are wrestling in the first match on their mat.
Mat B, Match 1 - Women’s freestyle preliminary
68 kg – Amit Elor (Walnut Creek, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/NYC RTC)
Vs. No. 1 seed Buse Cavusoglu Tosun (Turkey), 2023 World champion, 2018 and 2021 World bronze medalist, 2018 U23 World champion
Mat C, Match 1 - Greco-Roman preliminary
130 kg - Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Calif./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC)
Vs. No. 1 seed Amin Mirzazadeh (Iran), 2023 World champion, 2022 World silver medalist, 2021 U23 World champion
That’s right. Both USA wrestlers have drawn the defending World champion and No. 1 seed in their weight class. Elor owns a pin over Tosun from two years ago at Worlds. Coon has not faced Mirazadeh.
