Japan leads Olympic Games Paris 2024 Wrestling Medal Count at halfway mark with five medals

Japan leads the medal table in the sport of wrestling at the mid-way point of its competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. This includes nine of the 18 weight classes in the games, with final results in all six Greco-Roman weight classe and three weight classes in women’s freestyle.

Japan has earned five medals so far, with three gold medals and two bronze medals. Japanese champions at this point are Kenichiro Fumita (60 kg Greco-Roman), Nao Kusaka (77 kg Greco-Roman) and Akari Fujinami (53 kg women’s freestyle).

There are four nations with four medals to date: Iran, Cuba, China and Kyrgyzstan.

Based upon the quality of medals, Iran is second on the medal chart, with two golds, one silver and one bronze medal. Iranian champions so far are Saeid Esmaeili (67 kg Greco-Roman) and Mohammadhadi Saravi (97 kg Greco-Roman). Iran won the medal count in Greco-Roman with four.

Cuba is next with one champion, one silver medalist and two bronze medalists. Cuba’s champion was Mijian Lopez (130 GR), who won a fifth Olympic gold medal. He is the first athlete from any sport or nation to win a gold medal in the same disciplines in five straight Olympic Games.

China and Kyrgyzstan have the same medal count, with one silver and three bronzes.

Of the five nations with two medals in the first half of the Games, the United States is the only nation with two champions, Amit Elor (WFS 68 kg) and Sarah Hildebrandt (WFS 50 kg).

There were 16 different nations which had at least one medalist in the first nine weight classes.

We will update this when the event completes on Sunday.
