AMMAN, Jordan – 2023 U17 World champion Jordyn Raney of the United States will wrestle for bronze on Wednesday after falling in a narrow battle in the semifinals. Two U.S. athletes were pulled into repechage and remain in the hunt for a medal in Domenic Munaretto and Joseph Jeter.

Jordyn Raney narrowly lost his semifinal bout in a 2-1 decision to Aykhan Javadov of Azerbaijan. The match began with Javadov being put down, giving Raney an early 1-0 lead. Javadov initially scored a point on a reversal, but after a review, the officials rescinded it. Despite Javadov’s attempt at a headlock late in the period, no points were awarded, leaving Raney ahead 1-0 at the break.

In the second period, Raney was put down, allowing Javadov to lead 1-1 based on criteria. Raney then attempted a headlock, but the wrestlers were called back up. At the buzzer, the U.S. corner challenged, alleging a singlet pull, but the challenge was unsuccessful, resulting in a 2-1 lead for Javadov. Raney will compete for the bronze medal tomorrow.

Munaretto remains in the hunt for a bronze medal at 51 kg, following Turan Dashdamirov of Azerbaijan’s win in the semifinals. Munaretto lost by a 9-0 technical fall to Dashdamirov, a 2023 U17 World champion and two-time U17 European champion. After Munaretto was hit for passivity to drop behind 1-0, Dashdamirov scored on two consecutive four-point lift and throws to add eight points and secure the win.

In his next match, Munaretto will face Sainath Pardhi of India. Pardhi dropped his opening match to Dashdamirov, 5-1. With a victory, Munaretto could see Yerassyl Mussan of Kazakhstan in the bronze medal match. Mussan is a 2022 U15 Asian Championship silver medalist.

At 71 kg, Jeter was pulled back into repechage after Individual Neutral Athlete Vladislav Byrlia reached the finals. Jeter fell to Byrlia, 7-2, in the opening round. He will face 2023 U17 World silver medalist Yusif Ahmadli of Azerbaijan in the repechage match tomorrow.

Loc Webber, competing at 45 kg, was not pulled into repechage and his tournament ended after Umidjon Karomov of Uzbekistan fell to Marat Atshemyan of Armenia, 8-0. Webber was defeated by Karomov in the quarterfinals in an 8-0 first period technical fall.

At 92 kg, Evan McGuire was defeated in his first match by injury default after Individual Neutral Athlete Kanstantsin Kasyan threw him out of bounds for four points. McGuire was injured and could not continue. Kasyan lost his next match, making McGuire ineligible for repechage.

Repechage matches are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time. The full schedule is listed below.
