No. 1 Penn State goes 3-0 at Journeymen Collegiate Duals, defeats No. 8 Missouri, 41-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team (6-0, 0-0 B1G) dominated Missouri (2-5) 41-3 in its third and final dual meet of the day at the 2024 Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tenn. The Nittany Lions won nine of ten bouts to sweep the three duals at the event. All rankings listed are InterMat/InterMat Tournament Power Index (TPI).
The dual began at 125. Penn State true freshman Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 12 at 125, opened up Penn State’s final dual of the day with a 5-4 win over Gage Walker. Sophomore Braeden Davis, ranked No. 10 at 133, built up over 4:00 in riding time during a convincing 14-3 major over Missouri’s Kade Moore to give the Nittany Lions and early 7-0 lead. Senior+ Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 3 at 141, had to use extra time to beat No. 16 Josh Edmond. Bartlett scored early in the extra period to post the 4-1 (SV) win.
Sophomore Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 2 at 149, continued Penn State’s hot streak. Van Ness turned a first period takedown into a pin at the 1:57 mark, it was Van Ness’ third pin of the day and gave the Lions a 16-0 lead. Sophomore Tyler Kasak, ranked No. 4 at 157, controlled James Conway for three periods and rolled to an 11-3 major decision to give Penn State a 20-0 lead at the midway point of the dual.
Sophomore Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 1 at 165, won by forfeit (his second of the day) and Penn State led 26-0. Junior Levi Haines, ranked No. 2 at 174, took on No. 1 Keegan O’Toole in a much-anticipated match-up. The duo battled through regulation even. A wild scramble in sudden victory ended with an O’Toole takedown, with Haines dropping the thrilling 4-1 (SV) decision.
Graduate Carter Starocci, ranked No. 1 at 184, dominated No. 10 Colton Hawks in another top ten match-up. Starocci used a six-point third period to roll to a 10-1 major with over 2:00 in riding time to put Penn State up 30-3. Redshirt freshman Josh Barr, ranked No. 7 at 197, blitzed Tiger Jesse Cassatt. Barr opened up an 11-0 lead before pinning Cassatt at the 1:45 mark. Senior+ Greg Kerkvliet, ranked No. 2 at 285, finished off Penn State’s day with a final technical fall. Kerkvliet rolled to a 15-0 tech fall at the 5:57 mark over Missouri’s Jarrett Stoner. The Nittany Lions won the dual 41-3, closing out the day with a third win.
Penn State owned a 15-2 takedown advantage and picked up 14 bonus points off a forfeit (Mesenbrink), two pins (Van Ness, Barr), a tech fall (Kerkvliet) and three majors (Davis, Kasak, Starocci).
The Nittany Lions are now 6-0 on the year while Missouri falls to 2-5. Penn State returns to action in the new year, hosting Michigan State to open up Big Ten action on Friday, Jan. 10. The dual meet, a B1G Network national telecast, is set for 8 p.m. in Rec Hall.
Little Rock Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Little Rock Trojans secured victories in two of their three duals at the Collegiate Duals, opening and closing the day with impressive performances.
RESULTS
#20 Little Rock 24, #16 Missouri 19
Little Rock kicked off the day with a thrilling upset over #16 Missouri, earning their first ranked win of the 2024-25 season. The Trojans split matches 5-5, earning points through a pin, an injury forfeit, a technical fall, a major decision, and a decision victory.
Highlights included:
Nasir Bailey sparked momentum with a major decision.
Jordan Williams reclaimed the lead at 149 with a dominant tech fall.
Matty Bianchi followed with a 5-2 decision for back-to-back victories.
Joey Bianchi capitalized on an injury forfeit, adding 6 points to the scoreboard.
Missouri fought back with wins at 174 and 184, cutting Little Rock's lead to just 2 points. However, Stephen Little sealed the upset with a pin in under 90 seconds, securing the Trojans' first ranked victory of the year.
#20 Little Rock 0, #1 Penn State 44
Facing the nation's top-ranked Penn State, Little Rock showed resilience but fell short in their toughest matchup of the season. Despite the loss, the Trojans fought hard in each bout.
#20 Little Rock 27, Binghamton 16
The Trojans bounced back with a convincing win over Binghamton to close out the event.

Nasir Bailey opened with a statement pin.
Jordan Williams followed with a tech fall at 149.
Matty Bianchi added another tech fall at 157.
Joey Bianchi earned a hard-fought decision win.
DelSignore responded to a Binghamton win at 174 with a decision victory.
With the dual in Stephen Little's hands again, he delivered a dominant 20-3 tech fall (4:39) to secure the Trojans' second victory of the day.
Missouri Release
NASHVILLE - No. 16 University of Missouri wrestling went 1-2 on the day at Journeymen Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday, Dec. 22. The Tigers picked up a win over Binghamton and collected losses in ranked matchups against No. 20 Little Rock and No. 1 Penn State.
Mizzou picked up wins in 11 out of the 30 contested matches throughout the day. The Tigers' performance was headlined by a marquee victory for Keegan O'Toole over Penn State's Levi Haines, 4-1.
Match One: No. 20 Little Rock
The Tigers dropped their first dual of the day to Little Rock by a score of 24-19. Mizzou claimed five out of 10 matches, and picked up bonus points in two of their victories.
Freshman Gage Walker opened the dual with an impressive technical fall over Little Rock's Tyson Roach to give the Tigers an early lead. 141-pounder Josh Edmond picked up a takedown and back points in sudden victory to collect his seventh victory of the season. The Trojans picked up 3 victories to lead 12-8 at the halfway point.
Keegan O'Toole returned to the mat with a ranked win by technical fall to get the Tigers back on the board. Returning National qualifier, Colton Hawks picked up the second consecutive ranked win for the Tigers by knocking off Brock DelSignore of Little Rock. Heavyweight Jarrett Stoner ended the dual on a high note. The Texas native picked up a big third-period takedown to clinch his victory.
Match Two: Binghamton
Mizzou returned to the win column with a 19-15 dual win over Binghamton. The Tigers won five out of 10 matches in the dual, with the difference coming in bonus points across three of those victories.
At 125 pounds, Walker picked up an upset over Binghamton's 33rd-ranked Carson Wagner. Edmond kept the momentum going at 141 pounds, claiming his first bonus point victory of the day with a major decision. Redshirt sophomore James Conway closed out the first half of the dual with a strong technical fall to give the Tigers a six-point lead.
Recent MU graduate Joel Mylin made his dual debut, filling in at 165 pounds. O'Toole continued his hot streak to start the season, picking up yet another major decision victory. At 184 pounds, Hawks kept the ball rolling with a ranked win to put more points on the board.
Match Three: No. 1 Penn State
In the final dual of the night, the Tigers dropped a tough 41-3 loss to the returning National Champions and No. 1-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions brought in a victory in nine out of 10 matches and scored seven bonus point victories. Mizzou brought home a big victory at 174 between national title contenders.
Walker looked impressive to start off the dual before dropping a close decision between highly touted freshmen at 125 pounds. Redshirt junior Josh Edmond battled hard, taking a returning national finalist to sudden victory, when he gave up the go ahead takedown.
Two-time national champion Keegan O'Toole picked up a sudden victory win in the match of the night. An overtime scramble led to his victory over 2024 157-pound National Champion Levi Haines of Penn State. The win marked the Tigers first of the dual. Hawks held his own at 184 pounds against four-time national champion Carter Starocci, eventually dropping the match.
The dual featured an extra match at the end between Mizzou's Luqman Masud and Penn State's Kurt McHenry. McHenry brought home a victory in the exhibition bout.
Binghamton Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Binghamton wrestling team battled three ranked programs at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals Sunday at Ensworth Frist Campus.
The Bearcats were ultimately defeated in each match of their tripleheader, falling to No. 1 Penn State 52-0, No. 16 Missouri 19-15 and No. 19 Little Rock 27-16.
"Our effort against Missouri and Little Rock were great to see," said Binghamton Wrestling Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "Splitting a dual five to five matches with Missouri is a big step in the right direction for our program. It was great to see Micah add another nationally ranked win to his season, and to get out of here with a number of wins as well. The goal is always to win duals like this, but competing against three nationally ranked teams is a nice evaluation for us before the holiday."
Highlights
- The Bearcats won five of their 10 matches against Missouri, with Micah Roes getting a ranked win by defeating No. 32 Kade Moore in a 7-4 decision. Roes previously defeated No. 23 Jett Strickenberger of West Virginia 9-1 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational.
- In Binghamton's dual against Little Rock, Brevin Cassella earned a ranked victory by shutting out No. 30 Tyler Brennan 4-0.
- Cory Day added another pin to his total this season by defeating Little Rock's Keith Miley in the final match of the night. Day leads the team with six falls.
