U.S. Open Senior Men’s Freestyle Preview: World medalists Green, Fix, Diakomihalis, Valencia among top stars
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
The 2025 U.S. Men’s Freestyle Senior Nationals is a major event at the 2025 CLAW U.S. Open at the The Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada next week.
This is the first Senior Nationals of the Olympic Quadrennium leading into the 2028 Olympic Games in the Los Angeles, and many of this year’s entries are young talents who are looking to be in the mix for LA. A number of experienced stars will also be showcased.
The champions in the 10 men’s freestyle weight classes will punch their ticket to Final X at the Prudential Center in Newark, June 14. Only two of 2024 World and Olympic medalists in men’s freestyle accepted their automatic berths to Final X, Olympic silver medalist Spencer Lee (57 kg) and World bronze medalist Vito Arujau (61 kg), so those will be the only weight classes which will finalize the Final X pairing at the U.S. Open. In the other eight weight classes, the second Final X athlete will be determined at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament
As of April 17, two-time World medalist James Green (70 kg), plus World medalists Daton Fix (61 kg), Yianni Diakomihalis (70 kg) and Zahid Valencia (86 kg) are already entered in the U.S. Open. Past Senior World Team members in the field include Seth Gross (61 kg), Chance Marsteller (86 kg) and Hayden Zillmer (125 kg).
College fans will enjoy following the three 2025 NCAA Div. I champions who are registered, Jesse Mendez (65 kg), Dean Hamiti (79 kg) and Wyatt Hendrickson (125 kg).
Hendrickson, Diakomihalis and Fix are among a group of past age-group World champions in the field, which also includes Marcus Blaze (61 kg), Will Lewan (70 kg) and David Carr (74 kg).
Please note that registration is ongoing, and others could join the field at any time in the next few days.
The men’s freestyle division of the 2025 Senior Nationals will begin on Friday, April 25, with competition through the semifinals, as well as some consolation action. The tournament concludes on Saturday, April 26, with the championship finals set for 4:00 p.m. session.
All of the action will be broadcast live on FloWrestling.
Below is a weight-by-weight preview and the current entry lists (as of April 17 at 8:00 a.m. MT).
57 kg preview
Based upon current entries, there should be a first-time U.S. Open champion in men’s freestyle this year. Daniel DeShazer, a past Senior National Team member, may have the richest resume in the field. DeShazer was placed as high as fourth at the U.S. Open and is a Bill Farrell International champion. Another past U.S. Open placewinner is Brandon Courtney, an NCAA runner-up and past U20 Nationals champion. Liam Cronin, who was third in the 2023 Senior Nationals, placed fourth in the 2024 Senior World Team Trials. Cronin has been successful in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Sheldon Seymour, an NCAA All-American at Lehigh this year, placed fourth at the 2023 U23 Nationals. Another wrestler to watch is Nico Provo, who was third at the 2022 Bill Farrell International, will also challenge.

This should be the deepest field in the 2025 U.S. Open in men’s freestyle. 2021 World silver medalist Daton Fix is one of six current or past Senior National Team members in the draw. Fix was also a 2019 Senior World Team member, a 2019 Pan American Games champion, U20 World champion and four-time NCAA finalist. 2022 Senior World Team member Seth Gross is also a title hopeful. An NCAA champion in college, and a past Bill Farrell International champion, Gross lights up the scoreboard with his active style. Nahshon Garrett, who won Final X in 2018 but missed the Senior Worlds with an injury, is also highly capable. Garrett has twice been a U.S. Open runner-up, won a Pan American Games silver medal and is a past NCAA champion. A current Senior National Team member is young star Marcus Blaze, who was second at the 2024 Senior World Team Trials. Blaze was a 2023 U17 World champion and a 2024 U20 World bronze medalist. Two others who have been Senior National Team members and past NCAA champions are Nico Megaludis and Nathan Tomasello. Megaludis was a U.S. Open champion in 2020. Adding to the depth are 2023 U.S. Open runner-up Austin DeSanto, and 2023 U20 World bronze medalist Nic Bouzakis. This weight class should have an excellent quarterfinals round, with even more excitement to follow in the semifinals, finals and medal bouts.

Another talented young freestyler is two-time U.S. Senior Open placewinner Aden Valencia. Looking to break through will be past NCAA runner-up Real Woods, whose age-group achievements include a 2019 U20 Pan American silver medal and a 2016 U17 Greco-Roman World Team berth. A couple of other tough young athletes could be in the mix, Carter Young and William Dekraker. This is the only weight class which has two Senior World medalists registered so far, James Green and Yianni Diakomihalis. Green has won a World silver and World bronze medal and made seven Senior World Teams at 70 kg, including at the 2024 Worlds. Diakomihalis, a 2022 World silver medalist at 65 kg, is moving up to this weight class. Both have loaded resumes at the international level. Diakomihalis was a four-time NCAA champion for Cornell. Should they meet, it could be a contrast in styles which could be entertaining. Looking to make a first Senior World Team is Alec Pantaleo, who was second behind Green at the 2024 World Team Trials at 70 kg. Pantaleo was a 2022 U.S. Open and two-time Pan American champion. A pair of past age-group World medalist are seeking to power to the top here, Bryce Andonian and Will Lewan. Andonian was a 2021 U20 World bronze medalist and Lewan won a 2017 U17 World gold medal. Lewan has been competing overseas often since his college career ended. Three other U.S. Senior Open placewinners and past age-group World Team members are also looking to move up in the standings, Doug Zapf, Yahya Thomas and Brayton Lee. Zapf was fifth at the 2023 U23 World Championships at this weight. Lee and Zapf have both placed as high as third at the U.S. Senior Open, which Thomas has been sixth.

2022 World Team member Hayden Zillmer, a current Senior National Team member, is a top favorite at 125 kg. A two-time U.S. Open champion, Zillmer was second in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. He is among the few to make a Senior National Team in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. 2023 U23 World champion and 2025 NCAA champion Wyatt Hendrickson is seeking his first Senior U.S. Open title.
